If you’ve shared your life with a grey-muzzled friend, you know they are so worthy of love! When older dogs enter shelters, their futures can be uncertain. As the only national organization focused solely on the well-being of senior dogs, The Grey Muzzle Organization works to make those futures brighter!
Grey Muzzle improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, and other non-profit groups nationwide. In 2021, Grey Muzzle awarded a record $616,000 in grants to 77 animal welfare groups in the United States and Canada, benefiting more than 3000 senior dogs in need. Three organizations right here in Western North Carolina are current recipients of grant funding.
The 2022 call for Grey Muzzle grants is now open through March 16, and all animal welfare organizations whose efforts include helping senior dogs are encouraged to apply! Visit greymuzzle.org for details.
Asheville Humane Society
The Grey Muzzle Organization’s support allows Asheville Humane Society to provide critical veterinary care for senior dogs in the community. Providing this care keeps pets out of the shelter and in their loving homes. For adoptable senior dogs, Grey Muzzle also helps provide Adoption Care Packages, which include medication, veterinary or behavior vouchers, or prescription food.
Brother Wolf Animal Rescue
The Grey Muzzle Organization grant helps Brother Wolf increase the number of senior dogs they can take in, care for, and find loving homes. Through partnerships with municipal shelters in western North Carolina, Brother Wolf identifies at-risk senior dogs and brings them to their Adoption Center for needed medical care, then places them in loving, adoptive homes.
Watauga Humane Society
The Grey Muzzle Organization funding helps Watauga Humane Society establish a virtual foster program where senior dogs get one-on-one attention from a dedicated volunteer. Although overall intake has decreased, the dogs who enter WHS remain in care longer due to health, behavior, or age. Expanding the foster program provides senior dogs with individualized attention, finding them forever homes faster.
