Despite disinheritance and threats of legal action, there are no hard feelings between Uncle Ewan and Cousin Greg—not in real life anyway. Succession stars James Cromwell and Nicholas Braun, who played Ewan Roy and Greg Hirsch, respectively, will come together this Saturday as Cromwell—who is nominated for a Creative Arts Award Emmy that evening—cuts the ribbon for the grand opening of PETA’s Los Angeles event space, The James Cromwell Empathy Center, in honor of the actor, who has spoken up for animal rights at every turn. Cromwell’s good friend Ed Begley Jr. will speak at the event.
When: Saturday, January 6, 10 a.m.
Where: 2624 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles
James Cromwell and “Babe”
“There is no successor to James Cromwell—he is the king of activism for animals and others,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “Animals have a fierce and lifelong ally in James, and PETA is happy to honor him by naming a building after him for his relentless advocacy for all animals threatened with exploitation, torment, and slaughter.”
Cromwell is a PETA honorary board director and helped the group persuade Air France to end its shipments of monkeys to laboratories by locking himself in a shipping crate at Los Angeles International Airport. He also helped shut down Texas A&M University’s deplorable canine muscular dystrophy laboratory after being arrested during a protest at the university’s board of regents meeting. Most recently, he superglued his hand to the counter at a New York Starbucks store and starred in a parody video to protest the company’s surcharge on vegan milk and helped transfer a PETA-rescued piglet he named Babe to a sanctuary after the piglet fell off a truck taking him to be fattened for slaughter.
Vegan lattes, treats from Just What I Kneaded vegan bakery, and PETA Empathy Kits will be given away to guests.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
