Stephen Colbert, the celebrated late-night host, shared his amusement and critique of the media’s coverage of Monday’s solar eclipse during his opening monologue on “The Late Show.” Despite being captivated by the celestial event himself, Colbert couldn’t help but poke fun at some of the more peculiar segments aired by news outlets.
He began with a jab at CNN for their coverage titled “Animals at Dallas Zoo react to total solar eclipse,” playfully thanking the network for such crucial news and expressing a desire for more animal perspectives on current events. Colbert highlighted the oddity of the segment, which reported on behaviors such as guinea fowl running around and a zebra chasing a giraffe during the eclipse, humorously noting that the only surprising thing about zoo animals doing “anything” is that it diverges from their usual lethargy due to captivity.

The highlight of CNN’s coverage, according to Colbert, was an ostrich laying an egg during the eclipse—a common occurrence for ostriches, prompting him to quip about the news value of such an event unless an ostrich managed to poach an egg instead.
However, Colbert reserved his harshest criticism for Fox News, which he accused of having “the dumbest coverage” of the eclipse. He mocked a segment from the network that suggested immigrants were using the darkened conditions of the eclipse as an opportunity to clandestinely cross the U.S.-Mexico border, noting the absurdity of the idea given the darkness provided nightly.

Colbert’s own engagement with the eclipse was a stark contrast to the segments he lampooned. He shared with his audience how much he enjoyed the phenomenon, donning eclipse glasses during the monologue and adjusting the rehearsal schedule for “The Late Show” to allow the studio to experience the eclipse together, showcasing his genuine appreciation for the event amidst his comedic critique of its coverage.
