All rock, no action? Not The Pretenders’ powerful lead vocalist Chrissie Hynde! The plant-powered performer won’t let animal flesh touch her lips, rocks a faux-leather jacket, and doesn’t want anyone to just pretend they care about animals.
She Stands by Animals
A sky-high “Message of Love” from longtime PETA patron Hynde has hit the Windy City—the last stop on The Pretenders’ U.S. tour—appealing to people to stop eating animals. The billboard shows the shag-sporting singer next to a baby calf along with the words “Don’t Pretend! If You Eat Meat, the Little Guy Dies.”
PETA’s Chicago billboard kicks off Hynde’s new campaign urging everyone to face reality: Animals don’t want to be killed for their flesh, nor do they need to be. The billboard will also run in her hometown of Akron, Ohio, and in various cities throughout the band’s European tour.
Hynde isn’t some “middle of the road” animal advocate. From being arrested with PETA President Ingrid Newkirk as she helped PETA persuade Gap Inc. to stop using Indian leather to being carried off to jail during a traffic-stopping demonstration against KFC in France, the vocalist and guitarist has long been an instrumental voice against speciesism.
Would YOU Walk 2,000 Miles in Their Shoes?
From mother cows who are fiercely protective of their young to chickens who establish complex social hierarchies, every animal is someone. At slaughterhouses, workers shoot petrified and panicking cows in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and slash their throat—often while they’re still conscious. On farms—including those labeled “free-range” or “cage-free”—birds spend the majority of their lives confined to filthy, cramped sheds.
The animal you’re eating wanted his life just as much as you want yours. Don’t pretend any different!” —Chrissie Hynde
