“Oh my God, there’s smoke. And I can’t breathe,” Colon later recounted to NBC Philadelphia.
With her life at risk, Colon immediately called out to Yolanda, instructing her with the command word “danger.” This particular word, which Yolanda had been trained to recognize, signaled an emergency and triggered the dog to act swiftly. Understanding the seriousness, Yolanda quickly sprang into action, proving once again her intelligence and training. She dashed over to the special phone Colon had prepared for situations just like this and pressed the buttons needed to dial 911.

“Oh my lord, she actually called the police,” Colon recalled in amazement.

Yolanda, the courageous Labrador, was also in need of medical attention. She was taken to Penn Ryan Veterinary Hospital, where veterinary professionals treated her for mild smoke inhalation and tended to a scratch on her eye, a minor injury she sustained during her heroic actions.
Fortunately, both Yolanda and Colon made a swift recovery, thanks in no small part to Yolanda’s quick response. If it hadn’t been for Yolanda’s quick thinking and advanced training, the outcome could have been far more tragic. Yolanda’s actions saved both their lives, and she became a true hero in the eyes of her owner and community.
The day after the fire, Colon and Yolanda were joyfully reunited. Their bond, already deep, grew even stronger following this ordeal. Colon couldn’t contain her happiness as she embraced her loyal friend.
“She’s my family, my everything, and she loves me just as much,” Colon said, expressing her deep affection for her beloved companion.

The team ensured Yolanda received an abundance of treats, belly rubs, and attention, rewarding her for her incredible courage.
