Being a rescuer can be both a fulfilling and emotional journey, filled with moments of joy and heartbreak. For Kate, who has been fostering animals since 2020, every furry friend she’s cared for holds a special place in her heart. Yet, one dog stood out from the rest—an unforgettable pup named Nacho. Kate first met Nacho when the Nebraska Humane Society reached out to her about fostering a dog in urgent need of a warm and loving environment. Without hesitation, she welcomed him into her home, and over the next three months, the two became inseparable.
From playful adventures to quiet moments, they made the most of every day together. Eventually, a family expressed interest in adopting Nacho. Although Kate was overjoyed that the pup would finally have a forever family, saying goodbye was bittersweet. Knowing that fostering means helping animals find homes, she carried on and relocated to Ohio, believing Nacho’s chapter in her life had come to a close.
What Kate didn’t expect was that fate would soon reunite them. One day, while browsing the Nebraska Humane Society’s website, she couldn’t believe her eyes—Nacho’s familiar face was staring back at her. He was once again in need of a home.
“My friend let me know he was found as a stray. Previous owners were contacted, they didn’t claim him, so I went and adopted him,” Kate told Geobeats.
Bringing Nacho back home felt natural as if he’d been part of her life all along. He seamlessly integrated into Kate’s world, where he also bonded instantly with her other dog. Watching the two dogs play and grow close brought Kate so much happiness, and it was clear Nacho was finally where he belonged.
“The first night he got home, he just felt like he was like, ‘I’m home. I’m here. This is where I am meant to be,’” Kate shared, describing his immediate comfort and confidence.
One of Kate’s most cherished memories of fostering Nacho was his habit of resting his head on her shoulder as she sat on the couch. When he did the same thing after she adopted him, she knew without a doubt that Nacho was her “soul dog.”
“Nacho, he needs to be by a human. He loves to cuddle when I sit and watch TV at night. He’s half on my lap when I’m working…We are both healing each other,” she added. Kate and Nacho’s reunion is a beautiful example of second chances. Some bonds are simply meant to be.
