Psst! PETA’s 2024 Company of the Year knows the secret to being an angel for animals. Yes—Victoria’s Secret is flying high: right to the top of PETA’s list of compassionate companies!
Bra-vo to Victoria’s Secret & Co.!
Victoria’s Secret previously used up to 620,000 feathers —from chickens, Chinese pheasants, and ostriches—for models’ Angel wings in a single fashion show. But this year, the leading lingerie brand earned its wings when it swapped birds’ feathers for showstopping, fabulously creative, vegan Angel wings in its long-awaited return to the runway. Following exchanges with PETA, the company set out to showcase—and succeeded—heavenly wings using everything from 3-D printed materials to quilted satin in its catwalk comeback.
Victoria’s Secret’s kind move spared gentle, sensitive birds from being exploited and slaughtered for their feathers and showed the world that empathy is the sexiest thing anyone can wear. Birds’ feathers don’t belong in fashion, they belong on birds—so by using vegan materials, Victoria’s Secret upped the panty for fellow retailers.
Every Body is Somebody
Every accessory made from birds’ feathers is removed from a living, feeling individual. In nature, ostriches are social animals who live in tight-knit herds, have strong family bonds, and share parental duties. Their courtship rituals don’t involve lingerie; males dance to impress potential partners. Chickens are intelligent and social, and in nature, they establish dynamic social structures known as a “pecking order.”
As revealed in a PETA exposé at an ostrich farm in South Africa, workers forcibly restrain scared young ostriches and slit their throats before tearing the feathers from their still-warm bodies, sometimes in full view of their flock mates. Other birds—peacocks, pheasants, emus, turkeys, and chickens—all endure miserable lives on crowded farms and suffer painful deaths so that their feathers can be used for fashion.
Go On, Show Off Your Compassion
PETA is tickled PINK that companies like Victoria’s Secret are making a statement against the exploitation and abuse of sensitive, feeling animals for fleeting fashion accessories. YOU can help PETA work towards a future of compassionate fashion by pledging never to buy or wear any clothing, accessories, or other items made with feathers:
