For nearly a decade, Dora Nightingale has devoted her life to rescuing and protecting foxes, driven by an unwavering passion for these magnificent creatures. As a dedicated fox rescuer, she has made it her mission to ensure that foxes, often misunderstood and mistreated, receive the care, respect, and attention they deserve. Nightingale has become a voice for these animals, educating others about their importance in the ecosystem and advocating for their protection. Her tireless efforts have not only saved countless foxes but also inspired others to join her cause.

Her commitment to foxes led her to establish Fox Guardians, an organization aimed at educating the public about foxes and encouraging people to treat them with kindness. Over the years, her efforts have sparked a wave of admiration and respect for these wild creatures, inspiring others to see the beauty and importance of foxes in the ecosystem.

As her reputation grew, so did the number of foxes who found solace in her care. Her own backyard became a sanctuary for local foxes, a haven where they could roam freely, seek shelter, and enjoy peace in an otherwise unpredictable world. One particular fox, a striking female named Babybelle, had become a familiar face in Nightingale’s garden.

For more than two years, Babybelle visited regularly, often appearing as if she were part of the family. Her graceful movements, inquisitive nature, and gentle demeanor made her a favorite among Nightingale’s visitors and friends, who marveled at the close bond between the wild fox and the kind woman who cared for her. Babybelle’s regular visits turned her into a beloved fixture of the neighborhood, and many considered her one of Nightingale’s most cherished companions.

But one day, Babybelle’s behavior changed. Nightingale, always in tune with the foxes she cared for, immediately noticed something different. Babybelle, who usually roamed the yard freely, had suddenly become unusually protective of an old dog house that had been sitting in the garden for years. She stood guard over the structure, refusing to leave her spot no matter what distractions arose.

Intrigued by the fox’s uncharacteristic behavior, Nightingale decided to investigate. What she discovered was nothing short of magical. As she approached the old dog house, she caught a glimpse of something small and delicate inside. Peeking through the shelter, Nightingale found Babybelle’s secret: a litter of tiny, wiggling fox cubs nestled safely inside.

“I went out to feed the birds and spotted the tiny cubs wiggling in the shelter,” Nightingale recounted during an interview with The Dodo. “It was the most adorable sight I had ever seen.”

It became clear that Babybelle had recently given birth and had chosen the dog house as a safe haven for her new family. Nightingale quickly surmised that something must have happened to Babybelle’s original den—perhaps it had been disturbed or destroyed, forcing the anxious mother to relocate her cubs to a safer spot.

For all the years she had spent rescuing foxes and helping them thrive, Nightingale had never encountered a situation quite like this. The sight of the tiny cubs, vulnerable and in need of protection, filled her with a mixture of joy and concern. She knew Babybelle had chosen her yard for a reason, and now she had the responsibility of helping the mother fox in any way she could.

Unsure of the best course of action, Nightingale decided to consult with wildlife experts and a veterinarian. Fox cubs are typically hidden away in dens to shield them from predators and other dangers, so the sudden appearance of Babybelle’s litter in her yard was unusual. The experts advised Nightingale to monitor the situation closely but to avoid interfering. They assured her that Babybelle likely had everything under control and that the best thing to do was to provide the fox family with a safe, quiet environment.

And as it turned out, Babybelle’s instincts were right on target.

Nightingale set up a camera to monitor the cubs from a distance, allowing her to observe the heartwarming bond between the mother fox and her newborns. What she witnessed was a testament to Babybelle’s incredible dedication as a mother.

“The footage showed that Babybelle visited the cubs every two hours to nurse and groom them,” Nightingale said. “She was so careful, making sure each one was well-fed and clean before returning to her duties.”

As the days passed, Babybelle’s next challenge became clear: she needed to move her cubs to a new, permanent den. With the threat of predators and the risk of being discovered, she couldn’t keep her babies in the dog house forever. And so, one by one, she began the arduous task of transporting her cubs to a new den she had located near Nightingale’s garden.

Moving the cubs was no easy feat. Each time, Babybelle had to jump over a fence, carrying a cub in her mouth, before making her way to the new den. Despite the physical strain, Babybelle remained determined, making trip after trip until all five cubs had been safely relocated.

For Nightingale, watching this process unfold was both awe-inspiring and emotional. She had always known Babybelle to be a strong and intelligent fox, but seeing her transform into such a loving, protective mother filled her with an overwhelming sense of pride.

“It was incredible to watch her determination,” Nightingale said. “Each time she jumped over that fence, carrying a cub in her mouth, I felt such admiration for her. She did everything in her power to keep her babies safe, and it was a privilege to witness.”

As word spread about Babybelle’s story, Nightingale’s garden became a symbol of hope for wildlife lovers in the community. People began reaching out to her, expressing their admiration for Babybelle’s trust and Nightingale’s compassionate care.

“People comment on what an honor it is that a wild animal trusts me so much to place her precious babies in my garden,” Nightingale shared. “And I agree, it is so touching. I am honored and absolutely delighted that the little old dog kennel played an important part in potentially saving the lives of these extremely vulnerable five cubs.”

For Nightingale, her nearly decade-long journey as a fox guardian has been filled with unforgettable moments, but this experience with Babybelle stands out as one of the most profound.

“Being a fox rescuer is something that’s hard to put into words,” she said. “It’s a mixture of responsibility, love, and awe. I feel so fortunate to have gained the trust of these animals.”

As for Babybelle and her cubs, Nightingale remains hopeful that they will thrive in their new home. She continues to monitor the area, ensuring that the fox family remains safe and undisturbed.

In sharing Babybelle’s story, Nightingale hopes to inspire others to show kindness and understanding toward wildlife, especially as natural habitats continue to shrink.

She Could Barely Walk or Breathe When Rescuers Found Her

Rescuers swooped in, but when they got the pup into their care, she had lost the use of her back legs, was struggling to breathe, and weighed just around 20 pounds.

“Foxes play an incredibly important role in our ecosystem, and they need somewhere to live,” she emphasized. “Natural habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate, so if a fox family chooses your yard as a temporary home, please allow them the space to be safe. The cubs will eventually disperse in late summer, and until then, enjoy watching them grow—it’s like having a live-action nature documentary right in your backyard.”

As Babybelle’s tale continues to unfold, Nightingale is reminded of the powerful connection between humans and wildlife. In her words, “It’s truly an honor to be part of their world, even if only for a little while.”
