After two years of IBS & skin issues including sebaceous cysts, so many food trials- we finally found what worked for ours, it’s been three years now and no more issues. She’s allergic to chicken and fish, corn, & soy. She also has some environmental allergies.

She eats a Acana grain free duck in the AM and at night what helped most was the Answers raw. She can have all proteins except the chicken, she also gets the goat cheese bites with blueberries & cranberries and cow cheese w/garlic.

She can eat Tuckers raw Pattie’s but does best with answers. My St. Bernard/ Coonhound is on Tuckers and Farmina Cod bc he can’t have any chicken, Turkey or duck (fowl allergies) and is sensitive to beef & wheat. My beagle is on homemade & raw, we rotate. He can eat literally anything – he’s a beagle. My other three older dogs? They do just fine on Purina with homemade mixed in a few nights, oldest is 15, other than bad teeth that had to be pulled she’s healthy.

They are all individuals and there’s no one size fits all. It’s important to feed the dog in front of you

Natures Recipe, grain free, salmon, pumpkin, sweet potato. Because she is allergic to chicken and grains. The oil from the fish makes stinky farts , but it helps her skin. It’s been hard to find. So Whole Earth Farms, makes a chicken n grain free one too, that about same price, easier to find. It’s beef , lab n sweet potato. Meijer had both n we shop there, but been out of both recently. Petsmart and Petco have both but idk the Natures recipe out every where, but found the other. It’s bit better priced than Science Diet and Royal Canine which have prescription hydrolyzed protein food, but it needs prescription, hard to find, costs 100$ a bag if not more, n she does not really like it. These others she likes n eats with no issues. It’s extremely hard to find any dig food free of chicken or by products of chicken, then having to also be grain free. Nearly impossible. It’s those 2 only..I’ve spent literally hours in the pet store n grocery store reading every bag,n making notes n come to these are the only 2 I can get in this area. About 55 to 60$ for 14 or sonpound bags

I’m looking for a new food now. She was good on earthborn grain free for a while, then switched to Purina pro plan for about a year and recently spent 3 days in the hospital for GI issues and isn’t handling the PPP well, so back to chicken/turkey and rice until I find something!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for American Staffordshire Terriers with Allergies

What are the most common food allergens for American Staffordshire Terriers?
American Staffordshire Terriers, like many breeds, are prone to allergies from common ingredients such as beef, chicken, dairy, wheat, and soy. These ingredients can trigger symptoms like itching, ear infections, and gastrointestinal upset. Identifying and eliminating these allergens is key to improving your dog’s health.

How can I tell if my AmStaff has a food allergy?
Symptoms of food allergies in American Staffordshire Terriers include chronic itching, red or inflamed skin, recurring ear infections, excessive licking, vomiting, and diarrhea. If these signs persist despite treatment, it may indicate a food-related allergy, and an elimination diet or allergy test may be necessary.

What are the best types of food for American Staffordshire Terriers with allergies?
The best foods are limited ingredient diets, grain-free options, or hypoallergenic formulas. Look for dog food made with novel proteins (like venison, duck, or salmon) and carbohydrate sources like sweet potatoes or peas. Avoid artificial additives and fillers.

Is a raw diet good for AmStaffs with food allergies?
A raw diet can be beneficial for some American Staffordshire Terriers with allergies, as it allows for complete control over ingredients. However, it must be carefully balanced to meet nutritional needs. Consult your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist before starting a raw feeding regimen.

Are there any recommended dog food brands for AmStaffs with allergies?
Brands known for allergy-friendly dog foods include Hill’s Prescription Diet, Royal Canin Hypoallergenic, Blue Buffalo Basics, Natural Balance L.I.D., and Wellness Simple. Always check ingredient labels and consult your vet before making dietary changes.

Can treats trigger allergic reactions too?
Yes, treats often contain common allergens such as wheat, corn, or beef byproducts. Choose hypoallergenic treats made with limited ingredients or use fresh, single-protein snacks like freeze-dried lamb or plain cooked turkey to minimize risk.

How long does it take to see improvements after changing my dog’s diet?
It usually takes about 6–8 weeks on a new diet to notice improvements in allergy symptoms. Consistency is key—avoid feeding table scraps or switching foods during this time to ensure accurate results from the elimination diet. Always monitor your dog’s response and report changes to your vet.
