Our Chow is allergic to anything that has feathers or beak, beef, lamb and potatoes. We rotate between kangaroo, venison, pork and rabbit. If giving kibble we stick to the Zignature brand and Go Sensitivities Limited Ingredient in the aforementioned proteins. This worked for us after trying so many brands.

Try Nature’s Logic, but NOT the chicken, beef, or turkey. It doesn’t have rice or potatoes (too much carbs) but does add fruits and vegetables. Be sure to ease into any new food so it doesn’t upset tummy. We rotate between the sardine, salmon, lamb, pork. Also, be sure to leave out chicken and beef in treats.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for Chow Chows with Allergies
What are the most common food allergies in Chow Chows?
Chow Chows are prone to food allergies caused by common ingredients such as beef, chicken, dairy, wheat, and soy. These allergens can lead to symptoms like itchy skin, chronic ear infections, and gastrointestinal distress.
How can I tell if my Chow Chow has a food allergy?
Signs of food allergies in Chow Chows include constant scratching, red or inflamed skin, recurrent ear infections, hair loss, vomiting, and loose stools. An elimination diet or a visit to your veterinarian can help pinpoint the specific allergen.
What are the best types of food for Chow Chows with allergies?
The best food options include limited-ingredient diets (LID), hypoallergenic kibble, or novel protein diets using ingredients like duck, venison, or salmon. Grain-free formulas and those free from artificial additives are also ideal.
Should I choose wet food, dry food, or homemade meals for an allergic Chow Chow?
Each option has its pros and cons. Dry food is convenient and often includes allergy-friendly options, while wet food is palatable and hydrating. Homemade meals allow full control over ingredients, but they should be formulated with veterinary guidance to ensure balanced nutrition.
Can grain-free food help with Chow Chow allergies?
Grain-free food may help if your Chow Chow is specifically sensitive to grains like wheat or corn. However, not all dogs benefit from grain-free diets, and it’s essential to ensure the diet meets all nutritional needs and doesn’t contribute to heart issues (such as DCM) in predisposed breeds.
Are there specific brands recommended for Chow Chows with food allergies?
Some highly recommended brands for dogs with food sensitivities include Hill’s Prescription Diet, Royal Canin Hypoallergenic, Blue Buffalo Basics, Natural Balance LID, and Wellness Simple. Always consult your vet before switching foods.
How long does it take to see improvements after switching to an allergy-friendly diet?
Visible improvements typically occur within 6 to 8 weeks. Skin irritations may take longer to heal, but gastrointestinal symptoms often improve within days to weeks. Be consistent and avoid treats or table scraps that could reintroduce allergens.
