Dachshund Mix Melts Hearts With Her “Crush” on Chicago Vet Nurse
Most dogs dread trips to the vet, but one little dachshund mix in Chicago turned her appointment into something much sweeter. Journie, a 16-pound pup with a big personality, became a viral sensation after showing what her owner called a “crush” on a vet nurse during her very first visit.
Her owner, Andrea Swindall, had been scheduled to check out Bond Vet in Chicago’s Gold Coast, but when Journie was stung by a wasp that later became infected, the clinic fit her in right away. What could have been a stressful experience turned into an adorable moment when Journie instantly gravitated toward vet nurse Rubén Colón.
In the now-viral TikTok clip, viewed tens of thousands of times, Journie cuddles into Colón’s arms, wagging her tail and staring at him as if he’s the only one in the room. Swindall captioned the video: “POV: When you don’t exist anymore because your dog is smitten with the vet nurse.”
Swindall said Journie is usually a “ham” who loves attention, but even she was surprised by the level of affection her dog showed. “She was seriously in love,” she told Newsweek. “The way she curled up in his arms and looked at him was the cutest thing. I’m happy she felt so safe.”
Colón himself explained that working with animals has been his passion since childhood. “That little TikTok moment captured more than just a cute scene—it showed the trust and passion that really drives what we do,” he said.
TikTok commenters couldn’t get enough of Journie’s reaction. Some joked she had picked out her new husband for her owner, while others pointed out that Andrea would “never have trouble taking her to the vet again.”
Dachshunds, known for their bold and affectionate nature, are popular pets and ranked sixth on the American Kennel Club’s 2024 list of the most beloved breeds in the United States. Journie’s story highlights not only their charm but also the deep bonds dogs can form when they feel safe and cared for.
For Andrea, the biggest relief was knowing her tiny pup felt secure—and maybe even a little in love—at the vet’s office. What could have been a stressful memory became one of Journie’s sweetest milestones.
