Baby Girl’s Journey From Longest Shelter Resident to Forever Family

Animal shelters work tirelessly to help every dog in their care find a loving forever home. One of the most important ways they do this is through adoption events, where potential adopters can meet the dogs in need of families. When Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) in Orlando, Florida, organized such an event, they knew exactly who deserved to be in the spotlight.

Amid playful puppies and smaller dogs, one senior stood out. Baby Girl, a Pittie mix and the shelter’s longest resident, was hoping for her miracle. She had already survived a dangerous ordeal when a kind person saw her trying to cross a busy interstate and rushed her to safety. That single act saved her life and brought her into OCAS’s care.

Once safe, Baby Girl was examined by the veterinary team, who confirmed she was a healthy nine-year-old. Even better, she quickly showed how gentle and affectionate she was. “She is sweet and gentle with people and has shared her space with other dogs. We don’t know anything about her past life or how long she was a stray. But we do know one thing, she deserves better than spending her senior years inside our kennels,” OCAS shared.

To give her a break from shelter life, a volunteer named Su Morrison took Baby Girl into her home as a foster. The transformation was remarkable. Away from the noise and stress of the kennels, she blossomed into a happy, goofy companion who loved to show her playful side. “Having Baby in our home … it’s a pleasure. The longer she stays, the more we see what an absolute goofball she is. She is such a happy girl,” Morrison said.

When the adoption event finally came around, Baby Girl was placed front and center, ready to meet potential families. But as the day went on, no one stopped by her kennel. People passed by without a glance, leaving her overlooked and disheartened. At the end of the day, fifty-eight animals were adopted, but Baby Girl returned to her foster home empty-pawed. “No one is lining up outside for hours for this sweet girl. No one is fighting for her. No one is begging to adopt her, and it’s heartbreaking,” OCAS wrote.

A young and sweet pit bull was found behind a warehouse in south Memphis with hundreds of bite marks and other severe injuries. Liam, as the rescuers named him, had been used as bait for dog fighting and his abusers are still at large.

Just when it seemed like hope was slipping away, something wonderful happened. Morrison, her foster mom, realized she couldn’t bear the thought of Baby Girl leaving. She decided to make her a permanent member of the family. Baby Girl’s long wait was finally over, she was home.

Now, this once-overlooked senior spends her golden years surrounded by love. She enjoys peaceful walks, car rides, and endless affection from her favorite humans. For Baby Girl, the chapter of waiting has closed, and a new life filled with joy and security has begun.
