Jimmy Fallon Shares Heartfelt Tribute After the Loss of His Beloved Dog, Gary
Late-night host Jimmy Fallon is mourning the loss of his beloved English cream golden retriever, Gary — a dog who filled his family’s life with love, joy, and laughter for more than 13 years.
On October 20, Fallon took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news with fans, posting photos of Gary along with an emotional tribute. “She was the last name we signed on every birthday card,” he wrote. “She was our first baby, a therapist, a pillow, a big sister, a schoolmarm, a comedian, a party girl, and a rebel.”
Fallon lovingly described Gary’s playful personality and gentle spirit. Though she wasn’t much of a watchdog, she happily welcomed anyone who walked through the door. He joked, “She would have let burglars in and shown them where we kept the bacon and American cheese slices.”
The Tonight Show host recalled the small, everyday moments that made life with Gary unforgettable. He shared how she would dive into the pool right after being shampooed, swim joyful laps, then roll in the grass on her back, tongue out and paws in the air — a moment that forever reminded him of summer.
For Fallon, his wife Nancy Juvonen, and their daughters Franny and Winnie, the loss has left a painful void. “Franny, Winnie, Mommy, and I miss you. The house misses you. The house is so quiet. The quiet is so loud,” he wrote. “But that quiet is slowly being filled with stories about you and laughter amongst the sniffles. Thank you for everything. Gosh, we miss you so much. Goodnight, Gary.”
Gary’s story began in an unusual way — during a comedy sketch on The Tonight Show. Fallon first met her when she appeared dressed in a suit for a bit, introduced as “Gary Frick Jr.” The moment left such an impression that Fallon and Juvonen adopted her soon afterward. At the time, the couple had been trying to start a family, and Gary gave them the unconditional love and companionship they needed.
Over the years, Gary became an inseparable part of Fallon’s life both on and off stage. She appeared in interviews, popped up on his social media, and was mentioned often in his monologues. Fallon once described life with her by saying, “It’s companionship. It’s so much love. It’s unconditional love. I try to do everything with my dog.”
Today, her memory lives on in the stories, laughter, and love shared by the Fallon family. Though the house may feel quieter without her, Gary’s presence will always be felt — a reminder of how deeply a dog can touch the lives of those who love them.
