Rosie’s Quick Thinking Saves Two Dogs From the Heat

Rosie, a dedicated staff member at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, was out walking one of the shelter dogs when she came across something that made her stop in her tracks. On the sidewalk ahead sat a crate covered by a dark tarp, baking in the Missouri heat. Temperatures had soared to 98 degrees that day, and Rosie’s heart filled with dread as she realized what it might mean.

She approached cautiously, fearing the worst but hoping she had arrived in time. Beneath the tarp, the crate looked old and forgotten. Then she heard it — faint panting from inside. Without hesitation, she called for help over her radio. A wave of panic ran through her voice as she described what she found, worried that whoever was inside might not survive much longer.

“They radioed on their walkie talkie. They felt a little panicked because it was so hot outside,” a representative from Stray Rescue told The Dodo. Rosie lifted the tarp gently and froze. Inside were two dogs, pressed together for comfort, panting desperately in the heat. Despite their exhaustion, their eyes lit up when they saw her — they knew they had finally been found.

“They were panting heavily and needed to get inside right away,” the representative added. Rosie and the staff quickly rushed the dogs into the clinic, where the vet team gave them water, examined them, and administered vaccinations. The sweet pair, later named Arnold Jackson and Punky Brewster, were estimated to be around three years old and believed to be siblings.

Their gentle nature melted everyone’s hearts. Even after everything they had endured, both dogs wagged their tails and leaned in for affection. The staff knew they couldn’t let them down.

A family in Seattle dropped their dog, a black lab named Mitch, off at a local kennel one day, not expecting anything unusual to occur. But Mitch’s stay at the kennel ended with an employee brutally kicking and punching him – to the point of death.

Since the shelter was already at capacity, the team posted the pair’s photos on their foster page, hoping someone would open their home. Arnold found a foster family quickly, and soon after, Punky was also welcomed into a loving home.

Now, both dogs are thriving. Arnold and Punky have found safety, love, and the warmth of family — everything they were once cruelly denied. “These dogs are going to have wonderful futures! They are both so sweet,” the rescue shared.

Thanks to the compassion of Rosie and the incredible team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, two lives were saved from unthinkable suffering. Their story is a reminder that no animal should ever be left behind, no matter the circumstance. If owners can no longer care for their pets, surrendering them safely to a shelter ensures they’ll still get the chance to live and be loved.
