Vet Removes 24 Socks From Puppy’s Stomach in Shocking Emergency Surgery
Every pet parent knows the worry that strikes when their furry family member suddenly falls ill. For one family in Los Angeles, that concern turned into a shocking discovery after their seven-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog, Luna, began vomiting and showing signs of distress.
It all started when Luna’s owners noticed that her belly was firm and swollen. Fearing the worst, they rushed her to the Corona Animal Emergency Center in Corona, California. The family was anxious and confused — Luna had always been playful and healthy, and they had no idea what was causing her pain.
Upon arrival, the veterinary team quickly examined Luna and ordered an X-ray. What they saw on the screen left everyone speechless. Luna’s stomach appeared completely filled with foreign objects. The images showed what looked like a tangled mess inside her digestive tract.
The medical team prepped Luna for emergency surgery, knowing that her intestines were likely blocked. When the surgeon began removing the objects, the number of items seemed endless.
“What we found was jaw-dropping,” the hospital later wrote on Instagram. “Twenty-four socks, one scrunchie, two hair ties, one shoe insert, one small onesie, and several cloth pieces — all inside one puppy!”
Photos shared by the hospital showed X-rays of Luna’s packed stomach, followed by a post-surgery snapshot of the veterinarian surrounded by the pile of items that had just been removed.
The veterinary staff and Luna’s family were in disbelief. Somehow, the curious young pup had managed to eat dozens of fabric items without anyone realizing the extent of it.
Thanks to the quick-thinking family and the skilled veterinary team, Luna’s life was saved. After surgery, she began her recovery with a cone around her neck to prevent her from licking her stitches.
“Luna’s story is a reminder to trust your instincts,” the Corona Animal Emergency Center shared. “If you notice vomiting, lethargy, or a firm abdomen, don’t wait — act fast and contact your vet. Prevention is key, but we’re here for emergencies 24/7.”
Luna’s owners were overcome with relief and gratitude. They said the terrifying ordeal had taught them to be even more cautious about what their dog could access. They’ve since made changes around their home, ensuring clothes, socks, and small items are kept well out of reach.
Luna is now back to her happy, playful self, wagging her tail and showering her family with love. She’s also started training to help her break the habit of picking up household items.
What could have ended in tragedy instead became a story of hope and awareness — one that every dog owner can learn from.
Thanks to a dedicated veterinary team and her family’s quick response, Luna has a second chance — and a future full of tail wags, not tummy aches.
