Raccoon Breaks Into Virginia Liquor Store, Passes Out After Overnight Binge
Early Saturday morning in Ashland, Virginia, employees arriving to open a local ABC liquor store were met with a scene they never expected to see. Instead of the quiet store they anticipated, they found a raccoon lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. Sometime during the night, the animal had broken into the building, rummaged through shelves, and sampled several types of alcohol before collapsing from the effects.
Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter officers were quickly called to the scene. When they arrived, the raccoon was unresponsive but breathing, clearly showing signs of intoxication. Officials later jokingly referred to him as a “masked bandit” after discovering the trail of chaos he left throughout the store. While the situation was unusual and somewhat amusing, officers treated it seriously to ensure the animal was not suffering from alcohol poisoning or other injuries.
The raccoon was carefully transported to the shelter, where staff closely monitored him as he slept. After several hours of rest, he began to wake up and showed no signs of lasting harm aside from sluggish movement consistent with a hangover. Shelter officials confirmed that he did not require further medical treatment and was stable enough for release.
The Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter team frequently responds to calls involving wildlife that wander into unsafe human environments. They provide temporary care and medical evaluation before returning animals to their natural habitats whenever possible. In this case, their quick action ensured the raccoon could recover safely and avoid further danger.
Once fully alert and steady on his feet, the raccoon was released back into the wild. While the incident brought laughter online, officials reminded the public that wildlife encounters in urban areas are becoming more common. They urged residents to report unusual animal situations so trained professionals can respond safely. As for this raccoon, he was sent back to nature with a story that will not soon be forgotten.
