A Fort Worth Man Rescues a Starving Stray Who Had Been Wandering for Days
What started as an ordinary walk through a Fort Worth neighborhood quickly became an unforgettable rescue for Rojan Khatri. The 35 year old was out walking his own dogs to clear his head while chatting with a friend on the phone when something unusual caught his attention. Off in the distance, he noticed a very thin animal moving cautiously through the area. At first glance, the dog was so skinny that Khatri briefly wondered if it might be a coyote.
As he continued walking, he realized the animal was not only a dog, but one that seemed to be following him from afar. The frightened stray kept its distance, watching closely, almost as if trying to decide whether to trust him. When Khatri reached home, he put his dogs inside and ended his phone call, knowing he needed to focus entirely on the situation unfolding in front of him.
After checking local Facebook posts, Khatri learned the same dog had been spotted wandering the neighborhood for two days. Neighbors had shared photos and tried to lure him with food, but no one had been able to get close enough to help. Concerned and determined, Khatri grabbed treats and a spare leash and went back outside to see if he could do what others could not.
He spoke softly and moved slowly as the dog hovered nearby, clearly hungry but terrified. The stray showed interest in the treats but remained cautious, unsure of Khatri’s intentions. Patiently, Khatri left a small trail of treats on the ground, giving the dog space while allowing him to approach at his own pace. Over time, the fear in the dog’s posture softened, and he eventually allowed Khatri to pet him.
It was clear the dog had been struggling for some time. He was extremely thin but gentle, showing no aggression despite his fear. After nearly forty minutes of careful effort, Khatri was finally able to slip the leash around the dog’s neck. In that moment, everything changed. The terrified stray seemed to transform instantly, standing taller, walking confidently, and responding as if he had been walked on a leash many times before.
Once inside Khatri’s home, the dog, later named Snoopy, eagerly drank water, ate a full meal, and settled down quietly. Khatri gently removed burrs tangled in his fur while Snoopy rested nearby, finally safe, warm, and cared for. Khatri later explained that the dropping temperatures were his biggest concern, and he feared what might have happened if the dog had been left outside overnight.
That same evening, Khatri’s neighbor Sarah, who works closely with rescue dogs, stepped in to help further. Snoopy went to stay with her, where he remains safe while they search for his original owner or a permanent home. While many online praised Khatri as a hero, he insists Sarah is the real reason Snoopy continues to thrive. For Snoopy, one moment of trust opened the door to warmth, safety, and a future filled with hope.
