The end of 2025 is upon us—a natural time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the new one. Many of us will make New Year’s resolutions to improve our own health and habits, but what about those of our pets? If you’re hoping to prioritize your pet’s well-being in 2026, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education can help. In 2025, the Usdan Institute held twelve educational events, nine community events and three AMC signature events. In this blogpost, I’ve curated a list of on-demand recordings that align perfectly with common pet-health resolutions.
Spotting Eye Problems Early
Unlike internal organs, the eyes are readily visible to pet families, which makes recognizing changes a simple—yet critical—responsibility for pet parents. AMC’s board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Sandra van der Woerdt discussed the Top Five Eye Issues Seen at AMC and How to Spot Them Early. The list includes dry eye, glaucoma, corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, and cataracts.
Preventing Dental Disease
Because February is National Pet Dental Health month, every February the Usdan Institute hosts a presentation on dental disease. This year’s presentation focused specifically on Feline Dental Health, a crucial but often overlooked topic for cat owners.
Easing Anesthesia Fears
Many veterinary treatments—including routine dental cleanings to prevent dental disease—require general anesthesia, which can be a major sources of worry for pet owners. AMC’s board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. Andrea Looney helps allay those fears in her presentation Anesthesia and Your Pet: Easing Fear, Explaining the Facts.
Coping with a Cancer Diagnosis
Few things are more upsetting to a pet family than a diagnosis of cancer in their favorite fur-person. Dr. Renee Al-sarraf, one of AMC’s board-certified oncologists offers tips to take the sting out of that dreaded disease in her lecture Navigating a Pet’s Cancer Diagnosis.
New Services and Cutting-Edge Treatments
The Usdan Institute also produced several on-demand programs to promote new services and techniques at AMC, including:
Behavior
Dr. Vanessa Spano, AMC’s new board-certified behavior specialist gave a pair of talks to help you modify your pet’s unwanted behaviors:
Behavior Solutions for Pet Owners
Behavior Treatment 101: the Three M’s
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Dan Spector, one of AMC’s board-certified surgeons, highlighted his work with cutting-edge, less invasive surgical techniques in Minimally Invasive Surgery in Pets.
Neurology
Dr. Daniel Cimino, one of AMC’s board-certified neurologists dispelled misconceptions about Seizures and Epilepsy in Pets.
Bird Flu Basics
One lecture you probably don’t need to watch is Avian Influenza (Bird Flu): What Pet Owners Need to Know. Early in 2025, when we planned this presentation, we were concerned bird flu would be the next big pandemic. So far that prediction has fortunately been wrong, but the video is there in case bird flu becomes a serious issue in 2026.
