Because of the incredible generosity of iHeartDogs Hero VIP members and compassionate supporters who donated and sponsored this campaign, hundreds of survivors of domestic abuse and their beloved pets are receiving something deeply meaningful during one of the most difficult transitions of their lives: the ability to stay together, safe, and supported.
The Safe & Together initiative was created to address a heartbreaking reality that too often goes unseen. Nearly half of women and children experiencing domestic abuse never leave their situation because they cannot bring their pets with them to safety. For many survivors, their dog is not just a companion but a source of emotional stability, protection, and unconditional love. The thought of leaving that bond behind, especially knowing the pet may also face harm, becomes an impossible barrier to escape.
Through the combined efforts of iHeartDogs supporters and Hero VIP members, along with a meaningful partnership with Greater Good Charities, the iHeartDogs warehouse team came together to assemble and distribute thoughtfully curated care packages designed to bring comfort to both survivors and their pets.
A total of 347 Safe & Together care packages were created, with 235 for dogs and 112 for cats. These packages are now being distributed across eight domestic violence shelters that have the ability to house both people and their pets, ensuring that survivors do not have to choose between their safety and their dogs’ well-being.
Each care package was assembled with intention, recognizing that even small comforts can make a profound difference during times of uncertainty:
A toy to provide comfort and a sense of normalcy for the dog
A bag of treats or food topper to support nourishment and positive reinforcement
A soft blanket to offer warmth, security, and familiarity
For a survivor walking into a new environment after leaving behind an abusive situation, seeing their dog settle in with a familiar object or curl up with a soft blanket can provide an immediate sense of relief. These moments, while quiet, are powerful reminders that healing is possible and that they are not alone.
Beyond the emotional impact, this campaign also helps fund critical shelter resources. Every Safe & Together item purchased contributes one full day of safety and care for a domestic violence survivor and their pet at a facility equipped to keep them together. This means access to secure housing, supportive services, and a compassionate environment where both human and animal can begin to recover.
