Curiosity killed the cat, but in this case, it almost cost more than just curiosity. In Asheville, North Carolina, a disturbing incident unfolded last Tuesday that has sparked widespread concern and outrage. A group of individuals was caught on video pulling bear cubs down from a tree just to take selfies with them. This reckless behavior not only put the people and the cubs at risk but also disrupted the natural order of the wildlife area. This is peak tomfoolery!
What The Expert Says

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission was alerted and quickly responded to the situation. They found one of the cubs alone and distressed, separated from its family. The individuals responsible were easily identified thanks to the video capturing their faces.
This unfortunate event is now being used as an educational tool by wildlife experts. They hope to teach people about the dangers and ethical issues of interacting with wild animals in this manner.
When humans touch or move young animals like these cubs, it can cause serious problems. For example, their mother may not recognize them, or they might not be accepted back into their community because of the human scent left on them.
The Confrontation

The officials who confronted the group explained that their actions could have provoked an attack if the mother bear had been nearby. They also noted that the bear cubs could have suffered long-term consequences from being handled and removed from their natural environment. “They could have been mauled if a mama bear had shown up or left their scent on the babies, causing issues as they try to reunite with other bears.”
Thankfully, the cub involved in this incident was unharmed and will be returned to the wild. However, the emotional and developmental impacts of this event on the cub are still unknown. This reminds us that wild animals should be observed from a distance and not disturbed.
