Army Sgt. Josh Marino returned from Iraq carrying the invisible but heavy burdens of war. His physical injuries were just the beginning; he also struggled with a traumatic brain injury and severe PTSD, which created an emotional turmoil that seemed insurmountable. The horrors of combat left deep scars on his psyche, leading him into a spiral of despair. Unable to escape the pain and haunted by his experiences, Marino found himself contemplating ending his life, feeling as though there was no way to overcome the overwhelming darkness that enveloped him.

“In those dark moments, I felt like I couldn’t handle it anymore,” Marino confessed. “The pain was too much to bear, and I didn’t see a way out.”

One evening, determined to put an end to his suffering, Marino made a harrowing decision. He took out one of his knives, wrote a heartfelt farewell letter on his computer, and stepped outside his barracks at Fort Riley in Kansas for what he believed would be his final cigarette. The air was heavy with despair, and as he inhaled the smoke, he prepared to make an irreversible choice.

Just as Marino was about to succumb to his anguish, an unexpected sound pierced the silence—a soft “meow.” It was a faint cry, but it resonated deeply within him, offering a glimmer of hope in his darkest hour. Startled, Marino turned his attention to the source of the sound and saw a small black and white kitten emerging from the bushes.

The kitten approached him with a gentle curiosity, rubbing against his leg and allowing him to pet it. In that simple, tender moment, Marino’s resolve crumbled, and he broke down in tears. “I couldn’t hold back the tears,” he recalled in his short film, “Josh & Scout: A Mutual Rescue.” “It was as if this tiny creature knew I needed saving.”

From that life-altering encounter, Marino discovered a renewed sense of purpose. The kitten, whom he named Scout, became his companion and a source of comfort. “I stopped thinking about my problems and started focusing on Scout’s needs,” Marino explained. “It gave me something to care about, something to look forward to every day.”

Marino began feeding Scout daily, and the bond between them grew stronger with each passing day. The act of caring for Scout provided Marino with a reason to keep going, a lifeline that pulled him back from the brink of despair.

However, life took another turn when Scout suddenly disappeared, leaving Marino heartbroken and feeling the sting of loss once more. Despite the heartache, Marino’s experience with Scout had ignited a spark of resilience within him. He began to rebuild his life, slowly but steadily.

Marino started dating, and the positive impact Scout had on him influenced his relationship. Inspired by the joy Scout brought into his life, Marino and his girlfriend decided to adopt a cat. They attended an adoption event, hopeful yet uncertain about finding a new furry friend.

As they walked through the event, an astonishing moment occurred. “All of a sudden, a little black and white paw shot out from a crate and started smacking me on the arm,” Marino described. “I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was Scout.”

Marino opened the cage, pulled Scout out, and held him tightly. The reunion was nothing short of miraculous, and without a second thought, Marino adopted Scout, making their bond official.

Scout’s presence in Marino’s life inspired profound changes. He began to prioritize his health, eating better, and quitting smoking. With a renewed sense of purpose, Marino pursued higher education, determined to create a better future for himself. His relationship with his girlfriend, Becky, flourished, and they eventually married, building a life together grounded in mutual support and love.

Marino also found a new calling—counseling disabled veterans. Drawing from his own experiences, he became a beacon of hope for others facing similar struggles. He shared his story with fellow veterans, emphasizing the transformative power of compassion and connection.

Sign Petition Today: No more puppy mills!

Missouri is already referred to as the “puppy mill capital” of the country, and a new bill would make it harder for counties and cities to protect dogs from the cruelty of puppy mills.

Today, Marino continues to share his journey, highlighting the impact a small act of kindness can have on someone’s life. “In my opinion, real men like cats,” he asserts, advocating for the healing power of animals in overcoming trauma and emotional pain.

Marino’s story is a testament to the profound effect that love and compassion can have, even in the most trying times. Through his bond with Scout, Marino found the strength to rebuild his life and inspire others, proving that hope can be found in the most unexpected places.
