A dog named Ellie was lost at sea. For more than an hour, she paddled hard to keep her head above the water’s surface. Thankfully, she was spotted by a couple aboard a cruise ship—and the crew jumped into action to save the desperate animal. Find out more about how the cruise ship crew rescued this dog and how PETA is thanking them for their compassion.
Lost at Sea: Dog Rescued off Fort Myers Beach
After hearing of Ellie’s plight, the captain and crew said they knew they had to rescue her. Thankfully, they were able to retrieve her from the water. PETA is sending a Compassionate Business Award to Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa’s Sanibel Harbour Princess Yacht, and delicious vegan chocolates are on the way for the crew to thank them for their compassion and sense of urgency in rescuing Ellie.
Ellie’s guardians later saw the news of her rescue on TV and hurried to reunite with her. Ellie and her family had been out for a boat ride earlier in the day when she disappeared as they were sailing beneath the Sanibel Causeway. Her guardians told news outlets they had searched for Ellie for hours until they nearly ran out of fuel.
How to Keep Your Dog Safe at the Beach
All dog guardians should keep dogs on a comfortable and secure harness and leash when they’re outside, and at the beach is no exception. Dogs tire easily and can drown while swimming, so it’s important always to supervise them in the water and make sure they’re not overexerting themselves. In deeper water or on boats, dogs should wear a life vest and should never be left unattended.
You Can Be a Hero, Too: What to Do if You See an Animal in Danger
Never turn away from someone who needs help. If you spot an animal in imminent danger, please contact your local police department immediately. If it’s unresponsive, call PETA right away—day or night—at 757-622-7382.
Big or small, every action for animals matters. Whether it’s asking a neighbor to bring a chained dog inside, choosing to adopt and never shop, or reporting animal abuse or neglect to the police, anyone can be a hero for animals in their community.
