Being overlooked time and time again is a sad reality for shelter dogs with disabilities. They’re often the first to be euthanized in kill shelters since most adopters aren’t interested in caring for an animal who’s ‘extra work.’ One such dog, Blu, experienced this harsh reality as she waited for a home but no one showed any interest in her because she is deaf. The poor pup longed for a family but was passed over because she couldn’t hear. Thankfully, a compassionate couple, Mark and his partner Sean, specifically seek out dogs like Blu, understanding the challenges they face.
When Mark and Sean visited Family Dog Rescue in San Francisco, they were told that Blu hadn’t had a single visitor before their arrival. It was clear that this poor dog had been overlooked for too long. When they were introduced to Blu, it was immediately obvious that she was an exceptional pup. If they decided to adopt her, Blu would become the fourth deaf dog they had welcomed into their home. The couple’s patience and big hearts were evident, and as soon as they met Blu, they knew she was meant to be with them.
Blu’s background is quite interesting. Her previous owners explained to the shelter that they truly loved her, but circumstances forced them to sell their home and move into a rental property that didn’t allow Pit Bulls. The separation was undoubtedly difficult for both Blu and her original family. But now, it was time to give Blu the love and stability she deserved.
Blu transformed from being one of the shelter’s longest residents to a cherished member of Mark and Sean’s family. However, the trauma of being surrendered by the family she loved still lingered. Even though Mark and Sean would never consider returning her to the shelter, Blu remained unsure for a while. Her story is one of patience, healing, and unconditional love.
