The way we perceive certain dog breeds tends to shift over time, often influenced by trends or stereotypes. German Shepherds are a great example. Once feared by many because of their imposing size and strong features, these dogs were often seen as dangerous. Today, most people recognize that with proper training and care, they make loyal and loving companions. Sadly, not everyone sees them that way. Herschel, a German Shepherd, spent five long years chained up in a backyard, ignored, neglected, and forgotten.
His life was one of isolation, with little to no human affection. That’s why his reaction after being rescued and given a taste of freedom for the first time is so moving. For years, Herschel had been left chained up, trying desperately to chew through his chain in a bid for freedom. He was taken to a shelter twice, but his chances of finding a new home seemed slim.
Thankfully, FoundAnimals Adopt & Shop intervened and rescued him, eventually finding him a forever family in Washington. But before he made the journey from Los Angeles to his new home, Herschel got to experience something he never had before—a day out filled with Rocky Kanaka. He had the opportunity to experience freedom, love, and adventure. The highlight of this trip was when he saw the ocean for the first time.
In the video, you can hear Herschel’s sheer excitement as he views the ocean from the boardwalk. He stands up and speaks as if he’s seeing the healing power of the ocean. And as he goes closer, he can’t help but let out joyful screams as he feels the sand beneath his paws for the first time. His uncontrollable enthusiasm is a beautiful display of pure happiness, and it’s a reminder of just how deeply animals can appreciate the simple joys in life, especially after years of neglect.
Herschel’s story isn’t just about a dog being rescued—it’s a testament to the resilience and capacity for love that animals possess, even after experiencing hardship. His journey proves that, no matter how long they’ve suffered, dogs can still open their hearts to those who show them kindness.
In many ways, dogs like Herschel offer even more love, having seen the worst of human cruelty yet still willing to trust again when given a second chance.
