Cloe’s story begins on the side of a busy road, where she is found living in fear and uncertainty. The woman, Eli, who spotted her, noticed right away that something seemed unusual about her hind legs. Concerned for her safety, she and the other volunteers with Street Paws acted quickly and were able to catch her using a cage they had with them. “I thought something had happened to her,” Eli later recalled, relieved to be able to get her to the vet.
Once at the vet, the biggest worry was Cloe’s back legs. After taking x-rays, the vet revealed that her condition was a congenital defect that couldn’t be fixed. However, after some research, they discovered that while Cloe’s legs would require extra care, she could still live a happy life. This wasn’t a concern for Eli, who was determined to give Cloe the care and attention she needed.
Initially, Cloe was terrified around humans, but with time, proper nutrition, and gentle exercise, her confidence grew. Despite her disability, Cloe began overcoming various obstacles, proving just how resilient she truly was. Whenever she encountered something too difficult, she would simply wait, looking back at her human as if to say, “I know you’ll help me.”
One of the most significant milestones in Cloe’s journey was her first trip to the beach. Her rescuers were unsure of how she would react, given her timid nature and fear of new experiences. But to their surprise, Cloe trusted them more in this unfamiliar setting than at home. “She didn’t want to leave our side,” Eli recalled, noting how Cloe seemed to feel more confident outdoors, especially when surrounded by her people.
As Cloe settled into her new life, it became clear that placing her in a new home might be too overwhelming. Given her skittishness and her need for stability, Street Paws made the decision to adopt her themselves. “We realized it would be too traumatic for her to be rehomed,” El explained.
Cloe’s physical progress since her rescue has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite some tough days, she has blossomed into a playful and affectionate dog.
Today, Chloe doesn’t seem to be aware of her disability. Her spirit remains unbroken, and she enjoys every moment of life with the people who love her. To see Cloe’s remarkable story, click ‘play’ below.
