When Justin Lansford and his longtime girlfriend, Carol Balmes, began planning their wedding, Justin had a unique and heartfelt idea for his best man. His choice wasn’t a typical groomsman – it was his loyal and loving service dog, Gabe, a golden retriever who had been by his side through thick and thin. Justin knew that Gabe, who had provided unwavering support and companionship during his toughest times, was the perfect choice to stand beside him on this special day, symbolizing their incredible bond and the journey they had shared together.
In 2012, Justin’s life was irrevocably changed while he was deployed in Afghanistan. Serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, Justin’s unit encountered a devastating IED explosion. The blast caused severe injuries, resulting in the bilateral severance of his femurs and ultimately the amputation of his left leg. This traumatic event marked the beginning of a challenging journey for Justin as he returned to the United States to recover and adjust to his new reality.
“I was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, stationed in eastern Afghanistan in early 2012,” Justin recounted to ABC News. “Our vehicle struck an IED, which flipped the truck completely. The explosion left me with bilaterally severed femurs, necessitating the amputation of my left leg.”
The aftermath of the explosion left Justin grappling with both physical and emotional scars. To help cope with his PTSD and aid in his physical recovery, Justin reached out to Warrior Canine Connections, an organization dedicated to training service dogs for veterans. It was through this organization that Justin was paired with Gabe, a two-year-old golden retriever with a gentle spirit and unwavering loyalty. From their first meeting, it was clear that Justin and Gabe were meant to be together.
“Gabe assists me in so many ways,” Justin explained. “He provides a stable surface for me to lean on as I move around, and if I fall, he comes running to my side, allowing me to use him to get back up. He’s been an incredible support.”
In 2014, Justin decided it was time to take the next step in his relationship with Carol. He chose a special day to propose – Veteran’s Day – and enlisted Gabe’s help for the big moment. With Gabe by his side, Justin popped the question, and Carol enthusiastically accepted, setting the stage for their wedding the following year.
The wedding took place in 2015 in Largo, Florida, a day filled with love and joy. Gabe, who had become an integral part of Justin’s life, was given the honor of walking both Justin and Carol down the aisle. It was a touching sight, symbolizing the bond between the three of them and the incredible journey they had shared. Justin couldn’t have been happier to have Gabe as part of this momentous occasion.
Not only did Gabe walk the couple down the aisle, but he also took on the role of ring bearer. With a custom-made harness to hold the rings, Gabe performed his duties flawlessly, adding a special touch to the ceremony. Thanks to Gabe’s participation, the wedding went off without a hitch, leaving everyone with lasting memories of the beautiful day.
Since their wedding, Justin and Carol have enjoyed nearly four wonderful years of marriage, creating countless memories together. Gabe continues to serve as Justin’s faithful service dog, providing essential support and companionship. His presence has been a constant source of comfort and stability in Justin’s life.
In addition to their personal journey, Justin and Gabe have taken on a new mission together. They have begun fostering puppies for Warrior Canine Connections, helping to train and socialize future service dogs. This work has allowed them to give back to the organization that brought them together and to support other veterans in need.
One particular puppy, PJ, captured the hearts of both Justin and Gabe. PJ was a lively and affectionate puppy who formed a close bond with his foster family. When it came time for PJ to move to his permanent home, it was a stroke of luck that he ended up living just across the street from Justin and Gabe. Now, Gabe and PJ have frequent playdates, continuing their special connection.
Gabe’s intelligence, sweet nature, and dedication have made a profound impact on Justin’s life. The bond they share is a testament to the incredible role service dogs play in the lives of their handlers. Justin and Gabe’s story is a heartwarming example of resilience, love, and the unbreakable bond between a veteran and his service dog.
