Amid the chaos and destruction caused by Hurricane Helene in Tennessee, a search and rescue team made an uplifting discovery that brought hope to a devastated area. As days passed following the deadly storm and the flooding that followed, rescuers from the Kingsport Fire Department and Murfreesboro Police Department uncovered a remarkable story of survival near the Nolichucky River. While scouring the damaged riverbanks, the crew spotted an unexpected sight — a lone dog stranded about 20 feet in the air.

The Kingsport Fire Department shared the moment on social media, stating, “[She was] stranded around 20 feet up.” It appeared the dog had been swept away by the raging floodwaters during the hurricane, carried along on a makeshift raft of debris. That debris eventually lodged itself in a tree, and as the water receded, the dog found herself stuck high above the ground with no way to climb down.

Thankfully, rescuers had arrived just in time. Using a ladder, the crew managed to reach the trapped dog and carefully bring her down to safety. “After retrieving the dog, who was happily removed from the tree, rescuers were able to feed her,” the team shared. Despite her incredible ordeal, the dog appeared to be in good health, much to the relief of her rescuers.

The dog, named Athena, posed happily with the search and rescue crew after they brought her to safety. Once she was fed and cared for, Athena was taken to a local animal shelter, where she would remain until her family could be found.

The man responsible is facing felony charges but must never be allowed to own or care for animals again.

We are so grateful for Athena’s safe return. Let’s give a big shoutout to the Kingsport Fire Department for saving her life and reuniting her with her family. These everyday heroes make so many things possible! Thank you!
