For those gathered near the chimpanzee exhibit, what started as an ordinary day at the Detroit Zoo quickly turned into chaos. Visitors were entertained by the playful antics of two chimps, laughing and chasing each other through the trees. But in an instant, the joyful scene took a dangerous turn.

Rick Swope was standing at the front of the enclosure, watching like everyone else, when suddenly, one of the chimps slipped and fell into the moat that surrounded the exhibit. As the chimp struggled to stay afloat, the onlookers gasped, but the zoo staff made no attempt to help. It was clear the animal was in serious trouble.
Rick couldn’t stand by and watch any longer. He recounted the desperate moment to the Chicago Tribune, explaining just how frightened the chimp looked:
“It was the most pitiful thing I ever saw. This chimp had his hands up and his head was sticking out of the water. He was looking at the crowd, like he wanted someone to rescue him.”

Seeing that no one else was stepping in, Rick made a quick decision. Without hesitation, he jumped into the murky water to save the chimp. He explained what happened once he was in the water:
“People were showing me where he was, but the water was so dirty I couldn’t see through it. I swam around on the bottom until I finally found him. He was pretty lifeless, but I could see he was still alive. He looked at me, and I think he knew what was happening.”
Despite the danger, the chimp didn’t try to harm Rick. Rick even joked about the surreal nature of the moment, saying, “I was thinking, what do you do now? Do you do mouth-to-mouth on a monkey? I was worried he might bite me if I tried that.”
But before Rick could finish his rescue, he noticed another chimp coming down the hill with bared teeth. Unsure whether the chimp was coming for him or to help his companion, Rick quickly made his exit. Once he was out of the enclosure, the crowd surrounded him, praising his bravery. But Rick wasn’t seeking attention—he just couldn’t stand to watch an innocent animal suffer without trying to help.
