93-Year-Old Man Reunites with His Lost Dog Thanks to a Trail of Unwashed Socks
After weeks of heartbreak, 93-year-old Norm Feigenbaum from California was reunited with his beloved yellow Labrador, Sunny, through one of the most unusual and heartwarming rescue methods imaginable — a trail made from his own unwashed socks.
The ordeal began on October 4, when Norm returned from grocery shopping to find Sunny missing. The seven-year-old rescue dog had apparently climbed over the backyard wall in an attempt to follow him. Norm searched tirelessly, posting flyers, calling neighbors, and combing nearby areas, but days passed with no sign of his best friend.
“After several days, I really thought she was gone,” Norm told ABC News. “The house was barren without her.”
Refusing to give up, Norm contacted Dog Days Search and Rescue, a volunteer group specializing in lost pets. The team immediately organized a search, distributing flyers that tugged at the heartstrings of the community: “93-year-old owner missing his best friend!” and “Do not chase!” The team knew that Sunny, a loyal and sensitive dog, would respond best to something familiar — her owner’s scent.
A breakthrough came a week later when a woman reported spotting Sunny wandering in a nearby nature preserve, about a mile from Norm’s home. With coyotes and dehydration posing serious threats, time was running out. That’s when the team came up with an ingenious idea: they laid down a trail of Norm’s unwashed socks, leading straight to a humane trap.
The familiar scent worked perfectly. Within just 30 minutes, Sunny followed the trail, found the trap, and was safely rescued. Volunteers rushed her to the vet, where she was treated for minor scratches and dehydration — but otherwise, she was in good health.
When Norm and Sunny were finally reunited, tears filled the room. The elderly man knelt beside his loyal companion as Sunny wagged her tail, showering him with affection. “The whole thing is probably due to my smelly socks,” Norm joked, smiling through tears.
