Healthier Meals for Dogs With Allergies
I make my own food for my pet. And I use my dehydrator to make her treats. I also make her dog biscuits. I want to know every single thing that goes into my dog’s digestive system. All of my terriers have lived over the age of 15 since 1989. What I give my dog now is a protein, brown rice, and a vegetable.

First you need to find out what the dog is allergic to. What other people feed their dogs isn’t useful to know unless they have the same allergy.

I cook. He’s supposedly allergic to chicken, rice, soy, wheat. He’s got seasonal allergies too. 8 months of the year I manage without allergy meds and put up with some paw licking. Summer he needs Apoquel or Cytopoint to be comfortable. Crockpot a couple proteins (turkey, beef, venison, fish, pork) sweet potato, green beans, carrots, pumpkin, bone meal. Package in containers and freeze. Gets a probiotic and joint supplement. He’s 12. Still a sports dog….

I use Merrick Lamb Limited Diet kibble and canned Merrick food Limited Diet. We avoid pork, chicken, beef and turkey because everything was bothering my JRT and vet said these were common foods that would cause allergies. Poor boy was throwing up, wouldn’t eat and dehydrated. After a few bouts of that and trying out all types of food, even dog food from Australian; this particular brand doesn’t cause the same allergy issues as other brands.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for Jack Russells with Allergies
1. What are the most common food allergies in Jack Russells?
Jack Russells are often allergic to common protein sources like beef, chicken, and dairy. Other allergens may include grains such as wheat, soy, and corn. Identifying these sensitivities often requires an elimination diet or allergy testing by a vet.
2. What ingredients should I look for in hypoallergenic dog food for Jack Russells?
Opt for limited-ingredient diets with novel proteins such as duck, salmon, or venison. Look for grain-free options or those with easily digestible carbohydrates like sweet potatoes or peas. Avoid artificial additives, colorings, and preservatives.
3. Can raw or homemade diets help with allergies in Jack Russells?
Yes, raw or homemade diets can be beneficial if carefully formulated. They give you full control over ingredients and help avoid allergens. However, these diets must be nutritionally balanced, so consult with a veterinary nutritionist before switching.
4. Are there any specific dog food brands recommended for Jack Russells with allergies?
Some popular allergy-friendly brands include Hill’s Prescription Diet (z/d or d/d formulas), Royal Canin Veterinary Diet, Natural Balance LID, and Wellness Simple. Always match the food to your dog’s specific allergy profile and consult your vet before changing diets.
5. How can I tell if my Jack Russell’s allergies are improving with a new food?
Signs of improvement include reduced itching, clearer skin, less gastrointestinal upset (like vomiting or diarrhea), and better overall energy. Improvements typically appear within 6 to 8 weeks of switching foods, though it varies by dog.
6. Can treats cause allergic reactions in Jack Russells too?
Absolutely. Treats often contain hidden allergens such as poultry or dairy. Choose treats labeled as hypoallergenic or make your own using your dog’s safe ingredients, like dehydrated sweet potato or limited-protein biscuits.
7. Should I avoid grains completely in my Jack Russell’s diet if they have allergies?
Not always. Grain allergies are less common than protein allergies. If your dog isn’t allergic to grains, options like oatmeal or brown rice can be healthy. Focus on identifying specific allergens rather than eliminating entire food groups unnecessarily.
