The first Dane I had, I used to cook chicken and rice for him. He was allergic to the red food dye in kibble. That was a long time ago, I like to think commercial food has gotten better.

Mine has poultry sensitivity. Turns out most dog foods still have chicken even though it says “beef” or “salmon”. Super frustrating. Kirkland Nature’s Domain Salmon was the first one I could find that didnt. I recently was looking at others and there are now at least 3 other salmon options that do not also have chicken.

My deaf dog has gastrointestinal problems since birth. The vet told me to feed her LID (Limited Ingredient Diet) dog food 3x a day according to daily portion. Using Natural Balance is easy for her stomach. I suggest using free trials to test for diarrhea or solid. That’s how I found her allergies/sensitivities to seafood, duck/chicken, and beef. She is okay with venison but prefers bison meat and is healthy for 7 years.

Previous dane was allergic or sensitive to so many things. Did tests and elimination diets and found he had allergies to chicken, pork, turkey, and sensitivity to beef. I switched to raw because there were too many hidden ingredients in kibble (meat by-products, meat ‘meals,’ synthetics (sometimes derived from something he was allergic to), etc. With raw (either DIY or some premades), I can see exactly what he is eating. Also, what helped tremendously was testing his gut microbiome (I went through AnimalBiome), emailing lots of questions, doing FMT pills, and adjusting his diet to fix his gut flora.

Royal Canin Ultamino. Everything else we’ve tried made him sick, including a raw diet. This is the only food that works for us. Larry is allergic to meat and fish protein and cannot break it down properly. Ultamino pulverizes protein to a molecular level and tricks his body into getting the nutrients without the itchy skin and diarrhea.

Frequently Asked Questions About Feeding Great Danes with Allergies
1. What are common food allergies in Great Danes?
Great Danes often develop allergies to proteins like beef, chicken, and dairy. Grains such as wheat and corn can also trigger allergic reactions. Symptoms include itchy skin, ear infections, and digestive issues.
2. How do I know if my Great Dane has a food allergy?
Common signs of a food allergy include persistent scratching, paw licking, red or inflamed skin, chronic ear infections, and gastrointestinal problems like vomiting or diarrhea. A vet can help confirm the allergy through elimination diets or testing.
3. What ingredients should I look for in hypoallergenic dog food for Great Danes?
Look for limited-ingredient diets with novel proteins (e.g., venison, duck, or salmon) and grain-free or gluten-free options. High-quality dog food will also exclude artificial preservatives, colors, and fillers.
4. Are grain-free diets safe and effective for Great Danes with allergies?
Grain-free diets can be effective for dogs with grain sensitivities, but it’s important to consult your veterinarian before making the switch. Some Great Danes may not need a grain-free diet if their allergies are caused by proteins or other ingredients.
5. Can homemade dog food help manage allergies in Great Danes?
Yes, homemade meals can help control ingredients and avoid allergens. However, it’s crucial to work with a vet or canine nutritionist to ensure the meals are balanced and meet your dog’s nutritional needs.
6. What is the best type of protein for a Great Dane with allergies?
Novel proteins like duck, venison, rabbit, or fish are typically well-tolerated by dogs with food allergies. These proteins are less likely to have been part of the dog’s previous diet, reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
7. How long does it take to see improvement once my Great Dane is on an allergy-friendly diet?
Most dogs show improvement within 6 to 8 weeks after switching to an allergy-friendly diet. However, the timeline may vary depending on the severity of the allergy and how strictly the diet is followed.
