My shih tzu has a sensitive stomach and had pancreatitis at one point, so we have to be careful with what foods we give her. Because of that, our vet recommended and prescribed Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein dry dog food for our pup. We have seen an improvement in her digestive health on top of other benefits from the dog food since giving it to her. It is something we highly recommend, and she loves it, so I’m assuming she’d recommend it as well!!

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What are the best foods for Shih Tzus with sensitive stomachs?
The best foods are those that are easy to digest and made with limited, high-quality ingredients. Options like boiled chicken, rice, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes are commonly recommended. These foods help reduce irritation while still providing essential nutrients.
2. Why do Shih Tzus often have sensitive stomachs?
Shih Tzus are prone to digestive issues due to their small size and sometimes delicate gut health. Food intolerances, sudden diet changes, or low-quality ingredients can easily upset their stomach. Their breed-specific sensitivity makes careful diet selection important.
3. Can I feed my Shih Tzu boiled chicken every day?
Boiled chicken is gentle on the stomach and a good protein source, but it should not be the only food given daily. Dogs need a balanced diet that includes vitamins, minerals, and fiber. It’s best used as part of a varied or temporary diet.
4. Is rice good for Shih Tzus with stomach problems?
Yes, plain white rice is often recommended because it is easy to digest and helps firm up stools. It can soothe the digestive system during episodes of diarrhea or upset stomach. However, it should be paired with protein for balanced nutrition.
5. Are sweet potatoes safe for Shih Tzus?
Sweet potatoes are safe and highly beneficial for Shih Tzus with sensitive stomachs. They are rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that support digestion. Make sure they are cooked and served plain without seasoning.
6. Can pumpkin help with digestion in Shih Tzus?
Pumpkin is excellent for digestive health because it is high in fiber and helps regulate bowel movements. It can relieve both diarrhea and constipation. Always use plain, cooked pumpkin without added sugar or spices.
7. What proteins are easiest for sensitive Shih Tzus to digest?
Lean proteins like chicken, turkey, and fish are generally easier to digest. These proteins are less likely to trigger allergic reactions compared to beef or fatty meats. Always cook them plainly without oils or seasonings.
Gentle Nutrition for a Happier, Healthier Shih Tzu
Caring for a Shih Tzu with a sensitive stomach can feel like a delicate balancing act, but the right nutrition can make all the difference. By choosing foods that are easy to digest and tailored to your dog’s needs, you can help reduce discomfort and bring back the joy to mealtime. Pay attention to how your Shih Tzu responds, introduce changes gradually, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance from your veterinarian when needed. With a little patience and consistency, you’ll find what works best for your pup. In the end, a comfortable tummy means a more playful, affectionate companion—and that’s what every Shih Tzu deserves.
