Typically, when pets are allergic to food, it is the protein 93% of the time. So I would recommend switching to a less common protein source such as lamb, venison, or salmon. If no luck, your vet could always get you a prescription for a hydrolyzed protein diet.

Farmina N&D Dog Dry Puppy Grain
Have you tried Farmina N&D dog food? I use it mainly cause there are strict regulations in Italy about what is put into dog food. Another point is they have far less tocopherols than USA dog food. Tocopherols are linked to cancer and it is a preservative. Now, the dog itself could be allergic to grains and I’ve never heard of a dog being allergic to meat in general. You can try the ancestral grain or the grain-free dog food from Farmina.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for Great Pyrenees with Allergies
1. What are the most common food allergies in Great Pyrenees dogs?
1. Great Pyrenees are prone to food allergies, especially to proteins like chicken, beef, and dairy. Common allergens also include grains like corn, wheat, and soy. Identifying the specific allergen typically requires an elimination diet or allergy testing under veterinary supervision.
2. Which ingredients should I avoid in my Great Pyrenees’ food if they have allergies?
2. Avoid common allergens such as chicken, beef, dairy, soy, wheat, and corn. Artificial preservatives (like BHA, BHT), food dyes, and flavor enhancers can also trigger allergic reactions. Always check ingredient labels for potential irritants.
3. What are the best hypoallergenic protein sources for Great Pyrenees with food allergies?
3. Limited-ingredient diets with novel proteins such as duck, venison, salmon, rabbit, or kangaroo are ideal. Hydrolyzed protein diets, where the protein is broken down into non-allergenic amino acids, can also be effective for dogs with severe allergies.
4. Are grain-free diets better for Great Pyrenees with allergies?
4. Not necessarily. While some dogs with grain sensitivities benefit from grain-free diets, others do fine with grains like oatmeal or brown rice. It’s important to identify whether the allergy is to grains specifically or another ingredient.
5. What are some top-rated commercial dog foods for Great Pyrenees with allergies?
5. Popular choices include Hill’s Prescription Diet z/d (hydrolyzed protein), Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein, Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets, Blue Buffalo Basics Skin & Stomach Care, and Wellness Simple Limited Ingredient Diet. Always consult with your veterinarian before switching to a prescription or specialty diet.
6. Can homemade food help manage allergies in Great Pyrenees?
6. Yes, homemade diets allow you to control every ingredient, which can be ideal for managing allergies. Use a novel protein and a single carbohydrate source to start. However, ensure the diet is balanced by working with a veterinary nutritionist to avoid nutrient deficiencies.
7. How long does it take to see improvement in allergy symptoms after switching foods?
7. Most dogs show improvement within 6 to 8 weeks of starting a new allergy-friendly diet. During this time, it’s crucial to avoid all other foods, treats, and table scraps that might contain allergens.
