On a sunny May day, deputies were patrolling near Gardenia Street when they noticed a woman frantically trying to catch her small dog, Zora, who had slipped out of the house. Instead of running back home, the energetic pup seemed thrilled by her newfound freedom and happily darted through the neighborhood without a care in the world.

Deputies immediately stopped to help, with Deputy Layfield joining the chase as Zora zigzagged through the area on what officials later described as an “unscheduled neighborhood tour.”

Despite repeated efforts to coax her back, Zora stubbornly refused to cooperate. The playful dog ignored commands and continued trotting around as if she were leading her own parade. Her owner watched anxiously while deputies patiently followed behind, determined to bring the adventurous pup home safely.

Neighbors nearby could not help but smile as the tiny escape artist managed to stay one step ahead for a while. Still, deputies remained calm and focused, understanding how frightening it can be when a beloved pet gets loose.

A Clever Rescue Strategy Wins Zora Over

After spending time trying to corner the determined pup, Deputy Layfield came up with a creative solution. He used a snack he happened to have with him: French fries.

The tempting smell instantly caught Zora’s attention.

Her adventurous spirit may have been strong, but her love for snacks proved even stronger. Slowly, the runaway dog approached the deputy, finally allowing herself to be safely secured and returned to her relieved owner.

Officials joked afterward that Zora’s “desire for freedom was outweighed by her desire for French fries.”

Thankfully, the little dog was unharmed after her unexpected outing. According to the sheriff’s office, the only thing injured may have been Zora’s pride after her snack-fueled surrender.

Deputy Middleton also assisted in bringing the wandering pup home safely.

In the end, what could have been a frightening situation became a lighthearted reminder of how compassionate first responders often go beyond their normal duties to help both people and animals. And somewhere in Natchitoches, one small dog may now believe every deputy carries emergency French fries at all times.
