A quiet night in a small Argentine community took a startling turn when an unexpected disturbance sent a family rushing outside to investigate. What they discovered would lead to an unusual rescue operation and a mystery that continues to spark debate. In the early morning hours in Las Chacritas, located in San Juan Province, resident Yanina Baigorria was awakened by a loud crashing sound coming from her backyard. As her dogs barked frantically toward a cluster of bushes, she grabbed a flashlight and stepped into the darkness, unaware that the strange scene unfolding before her would soon leave neighbors and authorities searching for answers.
The incident took place in Las Chacritas, a small community in Argentina’s San Juan Province. Around 1 a.m., resident Yanina Baigorria was suddenly awakened by a loud crashing sound coming from her backyard. The noise was so sharp and unexpected that it immediately drew her attention. At the same time, the family’s dogs erupted into frantic barking, all focused on a patch of dense bushes near the property.
Concerned that something might be threatening her animals, Yanina grabbed a flashlight and stepped outside. As she swept the beam across the yard, she noticed a large figure standing in the darkness. According to her account, the silhouette appeared to be an unusually large bird.
The atmosphere quickly became tense. The dogs continued barking aggressively while the mysterious figure remained partially hidden among the vegetation. Then, Yanina says she witnessed something extraordinary.
She claimed the creature lowered its head, seized her dog, Perreta, and launched upward into the air. The movement was sudden and powerful. Within moments, the figure had vanished toward nearby trees, leaving Yanina shocked and struggling to comprehend what she had just seen.
“The tree was shaking in an unusual way, and the dog was barking up there,” she later recalled.
Adding to the strange experience, Yanina said she heard what sounded like an unsettling laugh or murmur coming from the winged figure. Frightened and desperate to help her pet, she rushed back inside to wake her husband and call for assistance.
Moments later, she says the creature suddenly departed from the treetop and disappeared into the darkness. Perreta, however, remained stranded high above the ground.
A Delicate Rescue Operation
Unable to reach the frightened dog themselves, the family contacted emergency services through 911. When officers from the 31st Precinct arrived, they were surprised by what they found.
Perreta was trapped approximately 65 feet above the ground in a tree, far beyond the reach of a simple ladder. The dog could be heard barking from her precarious position while rescuers assessed the safest way to bring her down.
What followed was a careful operation involving ropes, ladders, and considerable patience. Officers worked methodically to avoid frightening the dog further or causing her to fall. After a challenging effort, they successfully reached Perreta and brought her safely back to the ground.
For the worried family, the moment was an enormous relief. After spending hours frightened and stranded high above the earth, Perreta was finally back where she belonged.
Perhaps the most remarkable detail emerged after the rescue.
Despite her unusual ordeal, Perreta showed no signs of injury. A thorough examination revealed no scratches, puncture wounds, claw marks, or other evidence that she had been attacked or forcibly carried. Aside from being understandably shaken, the dog appeared perfectly healthy.
The discovery only deepened the mystery.
Experts note that even the largest birds of prey are limited in the amount of weight they can carry. Most can only lift relatively small animals, typically weighing between one and five kilograms. Their talons also tend to leave obvious marks on any prey they grasp.
Those biological limitations have led many observers to question whether a bird could have been responsible. The Andean condor, one of the largest birds found in the region, is also considered an unlikely candidate. Condors are built primarily for soaring and scavenging, not for gripping and transporting heavy animals. Their anatomy makes the type of vertical takeoff described in the report especially difficult.
As a result, no clear explanation has emerged for how Perreta ended up so high in the tree.
While theories continue to circulate, one fact remains undeniable: a beloved dog was rescued safely from an extraordinary situation. For Yanina and her family, that outcome mattered most. What could have ended in tragedy instead concluded with Perreta returning home unharmed, surrounded by the people who had spent the night desperately trying to save her.
The mystery may never be fully solved, but the successful rescue stands as a reminder of the dedication shown by emergency responders and the powerful bond people share with their pets.
