For months, an ordinary home in Ocala, Florida, felt far too quiet after a beloved senior dog disappeared without a trace. Every day that passed brought fresh worry as his family wondered where he was, whether he was safe, and if they would ever have the chance to hold him again. As hope began to fade, they continued believing that someone, somewhere, would recognize their cherished companion and help him return. Then, after an incredible journey that spanned several months and hundreds of miles, unexpected news finally brought the emotional reunion they had been dreaming about.

Apollo, a 13-year-old Shih Tzu from Ocala, Florida, disappeared in April after slipping through his family’s gate. Losing an older dog was especially heartbreaking for the Josie family, who feared the challenges he might face while alone. They never stopped hoping that someone would recognize him and help bring him back where he belonged.

According to the Josie family, a good Samaritan found Apollo wandering along a busy road shortly after he went missing. They believe the person did not take the necessary steps to locate his rightful owners and instead kept the dog. Without having Apollo scanned for a microchip, the opportunity to quickly reunite him with his family was lost.

Instead, Apollo’s journey continued for months, eventually taking him hundreds of miles away from home. Somehow, the little Shih Tzu ended up wandering the streets of New York City, far from the familiar sights and sounds of Florida.

A Tiny Microchip Made a Life-Changing Difference

Apollo was eventually rescued and brought to an animal shelter on Long Island. As part of the shelter’s routine intake process, staff scanned him for a microchip. Within moments, they discovered exactly where he belonged and contacted his family.

The news was almost impossible for the Josie family to believe. After months of uncertainty, they finally knew Apollo was safe.

His dad, Nick Josie, immediately made plans to travel to New York. He flew to JFK Airport to bring his longtime companion home, grateful that the shelter had taken the simple step that made all the difference.

Back in Ocala, Apollo’s arrival filled the house with excitement and relief. The family described the reunion as deeply emotional. One of the moments that touched them most was hearing the familiar sound of Apollo’s tiny paws tapping across the floor once again, a sound they had missed every single day he was gone.

For the Josie family, it was more than bringing a dog home. It was welcoming back a cherished member of the family whose absence had left an unmistakable emptiness.

Apollo’s remarkable journey also carries an important lesson for anyone who finds a stray animal.

The family hopes others will remember to take a found dog to a veterinarian or animal shelter as soon as possible to have its microchip scanned. The process takes only a few moments and can quickly reconnect lost pets with the people searching for them.

In Apollo’s case, that simple scan finally ended months of uncertainty and reunited an aging dog with the family who had never stopped loving him. His incredible journey serves as a reminder that even after months apart and hundreds of miles away, hope can still lead a beloved pet back home.
