Officers with the Vermilion Police Department, along with the Vermilion Fire Department and Lifecare EMS, responded to a reported single-vehicle rollover crash. Investigators determined that a 2008 Ford Focus had been traveling westbound on Liberty Avenue when it left the roadway, entered the Germans Villa property, struck a large landscaping boulder, and rolled several times before coming to a stop.
Inside the vehicle were the driver and her dog, Sugar.
During the violent crash, Sugar was thrown from the vehicle. Frightened and disoriented, she ran into nearby woods before anyone could safely reach her. Despite the confusion, her owner was able to tell responders that Sugar was friendly and microchipped, offering hope that she could eventually be found.
Remarkably, the driver escaped with only scrapes and bruises. Because she had been wearing her seatbelt, she did not require medical treatment at the scene.
As officers investigated the crash, the driver admitted she had been texting while driving. She was cited for Failure to Control and Texting While Driving, underscoring the dangers of distracted driving and how quickly a single moment of inattention can put both people and pets at risk.
A Community Comes Together for Sugar
After the crash, concern grew as Sugar remained missing. Every passing hour left her owner wondering where she had gone and whether she was safe.
Fortunately, the search ended with wonderful news.
The Vermilion Police Department later received a call from a resident reporting that a group of children enjoying the shoreline of Lake Erie had discovered an injured dog. Recognizing that something was wrong, the children immediately alerted their parents, who contacted the police.
Sgt. Sargent and Officer Drumm arrived first and quickly requested assistance from the Vermilion Fire Department.
Responders soon discovered that Sugar had climbed down the steep shoreline and found a small opening among the large rocks along the water’s edge. Tucked safely inside the cool shelter, she had remained hidden while waiting for help.
The challenging location required a coordinated rescue effort.
Fire Chief Brown and members of the Vermilion Fire Department worked alongside Vermilion police officers and Lifecare EMTs to carefully reach Sugar. Once safely recovered, rescuers gently carried her back up the steep shoreline to the roadway.
Although frightened and injured, Sugar was finally safe.
She was then transported to the Vermilion Veterinary Clinic, where she received a full evaluation and treatment for the injuries she sustained during the accident.
For her owner, the rescue marked the end of an emotional ordeal. After surviving a terrifying rollover and then losing her beloved companion, she was finally reunited with Sugar thanks to the dedication of emergency responders and the quick thinking of several local children.
The rescue also became an opportunity to recognize outstanding citizenship.
The Vermilion Police Department presented each of the children involved with a VPD “Did the Right Thing” coupon, redeemable for a free ice cream at Romp’s Dairy Dock. The Dairy Dock has partnered with the department for years to reward children who make responsible choices, whether by wearing a life jacket, fastening a seatbelt, using a bike helmet, or, in this memorable case, helping save a scared and injured dog.
Their compassion and willingness to act made all the difference.
Sugar’s rescue serves as a heartwarming reminder that acts of kindness, no matter how small, can change the outcome of someone’s worst day. It also highlights the importance of staying focused behind the wheel, as distracted driving can have life-changing consequences in an instant.
