What began as a simple and unexpected idea between a caring owner and his rescued dog has blossomed into an unforgettable tradition that continues to spread joy, inspire laughter, and brighten the days of countless people throughout Southern New England.
The lovable pup has become something of a local celebrity, delighting children, seniors, and families alike with his unforgettable “driving” adventures. Behind the laughter is a touching story about second chances, creativity, and the powerful bond between a man and the dog who changed his life.
When Chris Berard welcomed Buck into his home two years ago, he simply wanted to give the energetic mini Australian Shepherd the attention he had been missing. Buck’s previous owners cared deeply for him but knew they could no longer provide the time he deserved.
Chris gladly stepped in.
The decision quickly proved to be life-changing for both of them.
Soon after Buck arrived at Chris’ apartment in Moosup, Connecticut, an ordinary children’s tricycle sitting in a driveway sparked an unexpected idea. Chris carefully placed Buck on the seat and rested his paws on the handlebars.
To his surprise, Buck stayed perfectly still.
Curious to see what would happen next, Chris attached a broom handle to the steering mechanism and gently pulled the tricycle along the road. Neighbors doubted Buck would remain in place, but the calm little dog never flinched. He seemed completely comfortable, almost as if he understood exactly what he was doing.
That simple experiment planted the seed for something much bigger.
Later, while browsing a thrift shop, Chris spotted a children’s electric car. Instantly, inspiration struck.
“I’ve got to try it,” he remembered thinking.
Buck climbed aboard with ease, standing comfortably on the seat while placing his paws on the steering wheel. From that moment forward, the tiny vehicle became one of his favorite places to be.
A Simple Hobby That Changed Countless Days
What began as neighborhood walks soon touched lives in ways Chris never imagined.
A friend invited him to visit her husband, who lived in a rehabilitation facility after becoming paralyzed from the neck down. Chris brought Buck along in his little vehicle. The reaction inside the building was unforgettable. Residents and staff gathered around, smiling, laughing, and cheering as Buck rolled through the halls. The happiness on everyone’s faces left Chris deeply emotional.
That visit became the beginning of a much larger mission.
Chris, Buck, and Chris’ girlfriend, Kathy Berube, started visiting assisted living communities and senior centers whenever possible. Everywhere they went, Buck’s tiny vehicle created moments of joy that lingered long after he left.
Many residents eagerly waited for his visits.
Some smiled wider than they had in days. Others laughed out loud as Buck confidently “drove” past them. Even people having difficult mornings found themselves forgetting their worries for a little while.
The little dog never seemed to tire of making people happy.
As Buck’s popularity grew, so did his collection of vehicles. His first electric car was eventually joined by a miniature tank, several Jeeps, a tiny airplane, and other themed rides. At one point, Chris says Buck had around a dozen different vehicles ready for special occasions.
Each one became part of a new adventure.
Buck also became a familiar face at local parks, outdoor events, and even Walmart locations where dogs were welcome. Crowds naturally formed whenever he appeared. Many people couldn’t believe what they were seeing. They would stop in their tracks, reach for their phones, and eagerly snap photos or record videos of the adorable pup behind the wheel. Before long, Buck had become an internet favorite as well, earning his own Facebook page filled with photos and videos shared by fans.
A Parade Favorite Throughout the Year
Within the past year, Buck’s popularity earned him invitations to numerous community parades. Chris transforms each vehicle to match the celebration. At Halloween, Buck dressed as a skeleton while pulling wagons filled with other skeleton decorations. Christmas brought sparkling lights covering his tiny ride, creating a festive display that delighted parade crowds. For Valentine’s Day, Buck delivered roses to women at a local senior center while riding beside wagons filled with stuffed gorillas. On St. Patrick’s Day, he became an adorable leprechaun surrounded by festive decorations. Most recently, his Memorial Day and Fourth of July appearances featured patriotic decorations honoring American service members and veterans.
The pair, although based in Connecticut, spends plenty of time attending events throughout neighboring Rhode Island, where Buck has become especially well known. His next appearance will place him in one of New England’s most famous Independence Day celebrations, Bristol’s annual Fourth of July Parade. Chris says the hours of preparation and financial investment have always been worthwhile.
Every smile reminds him why they continue.
Even people who seem upset or exhausted often brighten the moment they spot Buck happily riding by. Kathy has witnessed the transformation countless times herself. She says strangers frequently tell them Buck completely changed their day. Some arrive feeling stressed or discouraged. Moments later, they’re smiling, laughing, and thanking the trio for spreading happiness.
For Chris and Kathy, those reactions mean far more than Buck’s growing popularity.
What began as a rescued dog receiving the love and attention he deserved has become an inspiring reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make an enormous difference.
One cheerful little dog, a tiny electric car, and a caring family continue proving that genuine happiness sometimes arrives on four very small wheels.
