Just days after celebrating one of the happiest achievements of her life, a young woman became part of an unimaginable tragedy that has left countless families grieving across Venezuela. What should have been the beginning of a bright future instead ended in heartbreak after powerful earthquakes struck the country without warning. When rescue crews finally located 25-year-old Oriana Ustariz beneath the rubble of a collapsed building, they discovered she was still holding her beloved dog, Kai. The deeply emotional scene has touched people around the world and stands as a moving reminder of the extraordinary bond between people and the pets they love.
Just days after earning her university degree, 25-year-old Oriana Ustariz, a model and brand promoter, was killed when rare back-to-back earthquakes struck Venezuela. Rescue crews later found her beneath the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in Caracas, still embracing her small dog, Kai.
Authorities discovered Ustariz’s body on the evening of Tuesday, June 30, inside the collapsed Moisés building in the San Bernardino district of Caracas, according to Jam Press. She was the last missing resident from the building to be located after days of intensive search efforts.
Family members had desperately hoped for good news throughout the search.
According to local reports cited by Jam Press, Ustariz was last known to have gone out for a walk with Kai before disaster struck. When her mother could no longer reach her, concern quickly grew as rescue operations unfolded across the city.
The eventual discovery was both heartbreaking and deeply moving.
Despite the destruction surrounding them, Ustariz and Kai were found together, a powerful reflection of the close bond they shared throughout their lives.
A Bright Future Cut Tragically Short
Only days before the earthquakes, Ustariz had celebrated graduating with a degree in physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy. It marked the beginning of what should have been an exciting new chapter filled with career opportunities and personal dreams.
She proudly documented the milestone on social media, sharing joyful graduation photographs alongside the people closest to her.
“Achievements mean more when you’re surrounded by the people you love most,” she wrote in a caption translated into English.
Those words have since taken on an even deeper meaning for those mourning her loss.
Friends and followers also remembered her as someone who embraced life with optimism. On social media, she described herself as “a lover of the beach and an ice-cold beer,” while another post encouraged others to “Fight for your dreams, nothing falls from the sky.”
Among the many photos she shared were several featuring Kai, the small dog who was clearly an important part of her everyday life. The pair often appeared happy and relaxed together, offering a glimpse into the companionship they enjoyed.
For many pet owners, the image of Ustariz remaining with Kai until the very end has become one of the most emotional stories to emerge from the tragedy. It highlights the extraordinary bond that can exist between people and their animals, especially during moments of fear and uncertainty.
Following the recovery, her body was transported to a forensic medicine institute, where post-mortem examinations were scheduled to take place, according to Jam Press.
The devastating loss came amid one of the worst natural disasters Venezuela has experienced in generations.
A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the country on Wednesday, June 24. It was followed shortly afterward by an even stronger 7.5 magnitude earthquake in what the U.S. Geological Survey described as a severe seismic doublet sequence.
The second quake is believed to be the largest recorded in Venezuela in more than 100 years.
The coastal city of La Guaira suffered some of the most extensive damage, while rescue teams across multiple communities worked around the clock to search collapsed buildings, assist survivors, and recover victims.
As of Friday, July 3, Reuters reported that at least 2,645 people had died, approximately 12,000 had been injured, and another 15,000 were left homeless as families struggled to rebuild their lives after the catastrophic disaster.
While thousands of heartbreaking stories have emerged from the earthquakes, Oriana Ustariz’s story has resonated with many because it reflects both profound personal loss and unwavering love. Her recent graduation represented hope for the future, while her final embrace of Kai stands as a touching reminder of the powerful connection between humans and the animals who share their lives.
