A routine trip to throw away the trash turned into a terrifying ordeal that one Connecticut family will never forget. In just a few frightening moments, their beloved rescue dog, Kobe, found himself fighting for his life after a sudden encounter with a bear. While the attack left him with severe injuries, Kobe’s remarkable determination and the overwhelming kindness of strangers have transformed a heartbreaking event into a story filled with hope and resilience.

The Torrington family’s Beagle mix is expected to make a full recovery after surviving the bear attack earlier this week. As Kobe continues to heal, a fundraising campaign created to help with his veterinary bills has inspired an outpouring of generosity, raising about $17,000 toward its $20,000 goal.

Owner Richard Hubbard said Kobe remains under the care of Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center in Middletown, where veterinarians have been working around the clock to stabilize him. Although his injuries were serious, Hubbard shared encouraging news about his beloved companion’s progress.

“Other than needing a transfusion, everything’s going great,” Hubbard said. “His wounds are closed, and he’s expected to make a full recovery.”

Veterinarians performed surgery on Kobe’s trachea after the attack. Hubbard said the young dog is now breathing on his own, marking another important milestone in his recovery. Every positive update has brought relief to his family, who have remained by his side throughout the difficult process.

The frightening incident happened around 11:15 Wednesday morning as Hubbard was taking trash to a nearby dumpster with Kobe on a leash, according to William Flood, spokesperson for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Without warning, a bear emerged from behind the dumpster. Startled by the sudden appearance, Hubbard dropped Kobe’s leash. The bear and the dog fought briefly before the bear eventually retreated and left the area. Authorities believe the bear may have been acting defensively because cubs were nearby. Wildlife experts note that mother bears can become especially protective when young cubs are present, making unexpected encounters particularly dangerous.

After the bear disappeared, Hubbard searched desperately for Kobe. What happened next amazed everyone involved. Despite suffering devastating injuries, Kobe somehow managed to find his way back home on his own. Hubbard said he discovered the wounded dog waiting at the front door when police arrived.

“When I opened the door for the cops, the dog just wanted to come in,” Hubbard recalled. “The vet doesn’t know how he made it to the front door.”

The emotional moment highlighted Kobe’s incredible will to survive. Even while badly hurt, his instinct was to return to the place where he felt safest, surrounded by the people who loved him. Kobe’s journey has already been one of second chances. Hubbard adopted the Beagle mix from a shelter when he was just 3 months old. Now 2½ years old, the rescue dog has become a cherished member of the family, making his recovery all the more meaningful.

As news of the attack spread, people from near and far rallied behind Kobe. Donations poured into a GoFundMe campaign established to help cover the substantial cost of emergency surgery, hospitalization, and ongoing treatment. The overwhelming response reflects how deeply stories of courage and resilience can touch people, especially when they involve a beloved rescue animal fighting to recover.

While Kobe still has healing ahead of him, every update points toward a brighter future. His strength, combined with expert veterinary care and the compassion of countless supporters, has given this young rescue dog the chance to return to the happy life he nearly lost.
