What began as a peaceful morning walk with a group of happy dogs quickly turned into a frightening experience that two women will not soon forget. In a matter of moments, an ordinary stroll through one of Melbourne’s popular parklands became a desperate effort to escape danger. Thanks in part to the quick reactions of the women and the protective instincts of the dogs in their care, the terrifying encounter ended without even more serious consequences.

The incident happened along the banks of Gardiners Creek in Kooyong, in Melbourne’s east. A 39-year-old dog walker from Glen Iris and a 67-year-old woman from Toorak were enjoying their usual morning route while looking after 11 dogs when they noticed something unusual.

The women spotted a man concealed among the bushes near the walking path. Before they had time to react, he suddenly rushed toward them and grabbed the older woman’s neck and upper shoulders. Recalling the terrifying moments, one of the women said the man then turned his attention toward her.

“He started walking over to me, threatening me to get into the tunnel, and he wanted to have sex with me,” she told 9News.

Although fear set in almost instantly, the women focused on protecting themselves and each other. Instead of freezing, they acted quickly while trying to assess every possible outcome. The dogs, who had been calmly enjoying their walk only moments earlier, immediately sensed something was wrong. Their instincts kicked in as they barked and charged toward the attacker, creating a powerful distraction that gave the women an opportunity to escape.

Loyal Dogs Step In When Their Owners Need Them Most

The group of 11 dogs chased the man toward a nearby tunnel beneath the Monash Freeway. Their protective response forced him to retreat, preventing the frightening situation from escalating even further.

During the chaos, one of the women managed to tear away part of the suspect’s clothing. That piece of evidence could prove valuable as investigators continue their inquiries. Looking back on the ordeal, one of the walkers said her thoughts were racing through countless possibilities, but she knew she had to stay focused.

“I was thinking of all the different scenarios that could happen, but I was more trying to jump into action, rather than focus on how scared I was,” she said.

While the emotional impact remains significant, both women are grateful that the situation did not end in a far worse tragedy. The dogs’ swift and fearless reaction became an unforgettable example of the remarkable bond between people and the animals they care for.

Victoria Police have since released a composite image of a man they wish to speak with in connection with the incident. He is described as having an African appearance and was wearing black tracksuit pants, white socks, slides, a black-and-grey hooded top, and a black face covering, and carrying a large bright blue backpack.

News of the attack has unsettled many residents who regularly visit the area. Locals have expressed concern that such a frightening incident occurred in broad daylight in a park that is typically considered peaceful.

Despite the trauma, the dog walkers say they refuse to let fear permanently take away a place they and the dogs have always enjoyed. They acknowledge they will be more cautious in the future, but remain determined to continue doing the work they love while taking additional safety precautions.

The incident serves as a powerful reminder of both the unpredictability of dangerous situations and the extraordinary loyalty that dogs often show when the people around them need protection the most.
