Roam, a K9 with the Colorado Springs Police Department, medically retired in January after being seriously injured in the line of duty. His courage and determination have inspired officers, community members, and animal lovers alike. This September, his extraordinary service will be recognized during the department’s annual Medal of Valor ceremony with an award created especially for police canines.
In October 2025, Roam was responding to a call when he was attacked by a suspect. The injuries were severe, and veterinarians performed emergency surgery that ultimately required the amputation of his left hind leg. The injury marked the end of Roam’s active police career, but it did not diminish his spirit. Instead, his recovery became a powerful example of resilience, showing how determined working dogs can adapt even after devastating injuries.
When Roam officially retired during a ceremony on Jan. 26, the event celebrated both his years of service and the beginning of a meaningful new chapter. Rather than simply stepping away from the department, he was introduced as a Special Department Advisor, allowing him to remain a beloved member of the Colorado Springs Police Department family. His handler, Officer Robert Comstock, has watched Roam overcome every obstacle with remarkable enthusiasm.
“He has recovered incredibly well,” Comstock previously told FOX21 News, describing Roam as energetic, happy, and always wagging his tail. Despite everything he endured, Roam has continued to greet each day with the same joyful personality that made him such a valued partner.
A Historic Honor for a Heroic K9
This September, Roam’s service will be recognized during the 41st Annual Medal of Valor Dinner. The Police Foundation of Colorado Springs announced that the department has created the Police Canine Medal of Courage, with Roam becoming the very first recipient. The award recognizes the extraordinary bravery and dedication demonstrated by police dogs that serve alongside law enforcement officers.
Being selected as the inaugural recipient makes the recognition especially meaningful. It not only honors Roam’s actions during the incident that ended his career, but also highlights the important role police dogs play in protecting both officers and the communities they serve.
The Medal of Valor Dinner is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25, at Broadmoor Hall. Along with recognizing courageous officers and K9s, the evening will include a silent auction supporting the event.
According to the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs, the annual dinner gives the community an opportunity to show appreciation and respect for officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. The program is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. until 9:15 p.m., with tickets available through advance purchase only.
Although Roam’s days of active police work have come to an end, his legacy continues to grow. His recovery, positive attitude, and unwavering courage have become an inspiration, reminding many that true bravery is measured not only by the sacrifices made in service but also by the strength shown in overcoming life’s greatest challenges.
