For nearly two terrifying hours, a Colorado mother waited desperately for any sign of her missing 7-year-old daughter, knowing that every passing minute made the uncertainty even harder to bear. Deputies searched for the child as concern continued to grow, but an important clue was sitting much closer than anyone might have expected. When Deputy John Gray arrived with his specially trained K9 partner Rex, the dog was introduced to the scent left behind on the girl’s sneakers. That familiar smell soon became the key that helped Rex understand exactly who he needed to find.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office was called to Centennial, Colorado, last week after the young girl became separated from her mother. Deputy John Gray arrived with Rex, his highly trained K-9 partner, and immediately put the dog’s tracking skills to work.
Gray gave Rex the girl’s shoes so he could learn the specific scent he needed to follow. Within moments, the dog understood exactly who he was searching for.
“You could see he sniffs those shoes, and then he knows the odor he’s looking for, and that’s what’s helpful,” Gray told FOX31. Instead of simply searching for any nearby person, Rex could focus on the unique scent of the missing child.
Rex Put His Special Training to the Test
The search marked an important first for Rex. Although he had undergone specialized training to locate missing people, this was the first time he had used those skills during a real search. Rex is particularly versatile because he has been trained for three very different roles. According to Gray, the K-9 serves as a therapy dog, is trained in explosive detection, and can track missing people.
“He is one of the first dogs in the state to be trained the way he is, because he’s kind of a triple threat,” Gray explained.
That combination of skills requires considerable dedication from both the dog and his handler. Training a canine unit to track missing people takes about 16 weeks, giving dogs like Rex the ability to identify a scent and help officers determine where someone may have traveled.
On this night, every hour mattered. The little girl had already been away from her mother for nearly two hours, leaving her family and responding officers anxious to bring her home safely. Rex picked up the child’s scent by sniffing a pair of her shoes and began helping deputies narrow down the search area. His nose provided officers with valuable information about both where the girl had gone and where she had not.
The trail eventually directed the search toward several backyards. Gray followed Rex into one of them, and there he spotted the missing child. Just 12 minutes after Rex began tracking her scent, the search was over. The girl was safe.
For her mother, the discovery brought an overwhelming sense of relief after nearly two hours of uncertainty. The careful training, teamwork, and Rex’s remarkable nose had helped reunite the child with her family far faster than a wider search might have.
Gray said Rex’s abilities also saved law enforcement significant time and resources. Rather than searching blindly across a large area, officers could use the K-9’s reactions to concentrate their efforts where they mattered most.
The reunion ended with a sweet moment of gratitude. Delighted that Rex had found her daughter, the girl’s mother offered the K-9 the very pair of shoes that had helped lead him to the child. She wanted Rex to have them as a chew toy.
Gray, however, had to remind everyone that even a heroic police dog still has rules to follow. Rex may have earned plenty of praise for his successful first tracking mission, but chewing on someone’s shoes was still off-limits.
