For Nina, life had once been filled with uncertainty, but everything began to change when the right people discovered her story. The unusual-looking stray dog was found wandering in the woods of Puerto Rico, far from the comfort and security every animal deserves. Although little was known about what she had experienced before her rescue, her cautious nature suggested she had learned to face the world carefully. Then Emily and Shawn saw photos of Nina from hundreds of miles away, felt an immediate connection, and decided they wanted to give her the loving home she had been missing.

When Nina arrived at the airport in New York, that uncertainty was written all over her face. The unfamiliar sounds, smells, and people left her visibly stressed and afraid as she entered a world completely different from the one she had known. Emily and Shawn did not rush her. They gave Nina the space she needed to settle in and discover her new surroundings at her own pace. Then, only a few days after her arrival, something changed.

One morning, the couple woke to find Nina sitting at the foot of their bed, a huge smile on her face. The nervous rescue dog was beginning to realize she belonged.

The First Smile Changed Everything

For Emily and Shawn, that expression felt like an early glimpse of the dog hiding beneath all the uncertainty. Nina had arrived only days earlier frightened by an unfamiliar airport, unfamiliar people, and an entirely new home. Now she was sitting at the end of their bed looking unmistakably more comfortable.

Trust would continue developing gradually, but that morning offered something her new family had been waiting to see: Nina beginning to relax. The dog who had once been alone in the woods was starting to understand that these people weren’t going anywhere.

Nina’s Unique Appearance Is Part of Her Charm

Nina’s appearance often leaves people curious, but she is a healthy and happy dog. She needed surgery to correct entropion, a condition in which the eyelid turns inward, and she requires daily eye drops because her eyelids do not close properly. Entropion can be uncomfortable because the inward-turning eyelid may cause eyelashes or surrounding hair to rub against the eye. In Nina’s case, surgery helped address the problem, while her family’s daily routine now includes eye drops because she cannot completely close her eyelids. It is an extra bit of care that has simply become part of loving Nina.

Those needs have not stopped Nina from enjoying her new life. With proper care from her family, she can play, relax, and spend time with the other dogs just like any beloved pet.

Her distinctive looks have also inspired plenty of guesses about her breed. During one of Nina’s first veterinary visits, staff members wondered what kind of dog she could be. Emily and Shawn jokingly called her a “chupacabra,” referring to the legendary creature from Latin American folklore.

The nickname was particularly fitting considering where Nina had been found. Puerto Rico is closely associated with the legend of the chupacabra, the mysterious creature whose name roughly translates to “goat-sucker” and has inspired decades of folklore and supposed sightings. Nina was obviously no mythical monster, but with her unusual features and mysterious background, the affectionate joke stuck.

Fortunately, solving the mystery of Nina’s actual ancestry required considerably less folklore. A DNA test revealed that she wasn’t a Xoloitzcuintli after all. Instead, Nina turned out to be a mixture of several breeds, including Doberman Pinscher, proving once again that appearances can be wonderfully misleading when it comes to rescue dogs.

Nina also underwent additional testing at Cornell Veterinary Hospital because of congenital chromosomal abnormalities. Despite those concerns and the extra care she requires, she continues to thrive with the support of her family. Perhaps the sweetest part of Nina’s transformation is the bond she has formed with Emily and Shawn’s other dogs. Rather than being intimidated by the newest member of the household, the dogs have welcomed her into their pack and seem to treat her like the baby of the family.

Nina’s face may be the first thing people notice, but Emily and Shawn have discovered there is far more to remember about her. She is the frightened airport arrival who appeared at the foot of their bed days later, wearing an enormous smile. She is the mysterious “chupacabra” who turned out to be a one-of-a-kind mixed breed. And she is the former stray who now has an entire canine family watching over its newest little sister.

Nina may never look quite like any other dog people meet, and that seems perfectly appropriate. There was never going to be anything ordinary about her story. Somewhere between the woods of Puerto Rico and a bed in New York, the frightened little dog stopped being the mystery everyone was trying to solve and simply became Nina: safe, adored, and finally home.
