When Dante sat alone in the middle of a Kentucky road one October day, there was nothing to suggest just how extraordinary his story would become. Cars reportedly passed the stranded dog without stopping, leaving him to wait and hope that someone would finally notice he needed help. Eventually, that moment came. Dante was rescued from the road and later adopted by Kami Neihoff, giving him the safety and family he had been missing. Yet as Neihoff got to know her new companion, she discovered that Dante carried a mystery no one could have predicted.
Because no one knew where Dante had come from or what his life had been like before his rescue, much of his history remained a blank page. Neihoff was especially curious about his unusual coat, which stood out even to her experienced eye.
As a groomer, she had seen countless dogs with different coat types and textures. Dante, however, seemed different enough that she wanted to learn more about his ancestry and possible genetic health concerns.
“I’m a groomer now and really wanted to know more about his coat since it’s different from any I’ve seen, as well as his genetic health since I didn’t know his history,” Neihoff told The Dodo.
A dog DNA test seemed like an easy way to uncover at least part of Dante’s mysterious past. Neihoff sent off a sample through Embark and waited eagerly for the results, hoping she might finally learn what breeds had shaped the dog who had unexpectedly become part of her family. Instead, the test failed. The company was apparently just as puzzled and offered two additional attempts. Both of those tests failed as well. Neihoff received a refund, but after three unsuccessful tests, her curiosity had only grown stronger.
“I reached out to them for more info and they couldn’t provide me with any,” Neihoff said.
A Mystery Hidden in Dante’s DNA
Rather than abandon the search, Neihoff decided to try another company. She ordered a DNA test through Wisdom, hoping different technology might finally provide the answers she had been seeking. Once again, however, the testing process did not go as expected. Two more attempts failed, bringing Dante’s growing string of mysterious results to five.
At that point, a cheek swab no longer seemed sufficient. The next step was a blood test, which Neihoff hoped would provide a clearer genetic sample. She brought Dante to the veterinarian for the blood draw, and the sample was sent to the laboratory. Even the blood test failed.
After six unsuccessful attempts involving two companies and different types of samples, the situation had become much more than a simple question about Dante’s breed. Neihoff could not understand how a blood sample could produce the same confusing outcome, so she contacted Wisdom looking for an explanation.
“I contacted Wisdom after the blood test failed because I was unsure how that was possible,” Neihoff said. “I actually got an email from their lab manager. She had looked at his raw data and finally gave me an answer as to why we got so many failures.”
That answer completely changed the story. Dante is a chimera.
Early in his development, two embryos fused together. As a result, Dante carries two different sets of DNA within his body. What appeared to be a series of frustrating testing failures was actually a clue pointing toward something exceptionally unusual about him.
The testing equipment could not properly separate the two genetic profiles to produce the straightforward breed results Neihoff had expected. Each failed test essentially encountered a biological puzzle that standard testing was not designed to resolve.
After six attempts, Neihoff finally understood why finding Dante’s ancestry had proven so difficult. She may not have received a list of breeds, but she discovered something far more unexpected about the dog once left waiting in a Kentucky road. There is a potential health consideration associated with Dante’s unusual genetics. According to Neihoff, he could face a somewhat higher risk of autoimmune problems because his body could potentially recognize one set of DNA as foreign. Fortunately, she said Dante has remained healthy so far.
“He is at a slightly higher risk for autoimmune issues in the future due to his body potentially treating one set of DNA as foreign, but so far he’s been healthy,” Neihoff said.
Dante’s exact breed mix may remain a mystery, and perhaps that is fitting for a dog whose story has been filled with unexpected turns. What began as an attempt to understand his coat and ancestry ultimately revealed something much more remarkable about who he is.
For Neihoff, the unanswered question of Dante’s breed now matters less than what she learned along the way. The dog who once waited for someone to stop and give him a chance turned out to be unique in a way his family never could have imagined.
