Peanut had been left in a place where no puppy should ever have to struggle for survival. When 85-year-old Karl Korff learned that the young dog had been abandoned on an ant hill in Clovis, New Mexico, he went to help her.
What he found was heartbreaking. Peanut had strips of hair missing, painful scabs covered her small body, and her damaged skin showed just how much she had endured. Yet beneath her injuries was a puppy still holding on, quietly looking toward the person who had come to rescue her.
Korff, founder of Adopt A Pet Society, had received a call about Peanut and immediately knew she needed help. After decades of rescuing animals in desperate situations, he was no stranger to seeing dogs arrive in heartbreaking condition.
“She has strips of hair missing. She has scabs all over her,” Korff told KOB 4.
Korff has been helping dogs since 1976, when he began rescue work with his wife in Iowa before later continuing that mission in New Mexico. That experience has brought countless animals into his care over the years, and now Peanut was one more little life depending on him for a chance to recover.
Peanut Begins to Heal
The day after her rescue, Peanut was taken to a veterinarian and diagnosed with mange, according to Korff. He said ants had also been eating at her hair and already damaged skin, leaving the little dog in need of weeks of careful treatment.
Peanut received antibiotics, shots, and antiseptic baths to address her condition and give her skin an opportunity to heal. Gradually, the frightened and injured puppy began showing signs of improvement, moving further from the terrible circumstances in which she had been found.
For Korff, one of the most memorable parts of the rescue was the way Peanut looked at him. She could not explain what had happened to her, but her expression seemed to say enough.
“She just looked at you like…can’t you help me? That was it,” Korff said.
It was a small moment that stayed with the longtime rescuer. Peanut had endured pain and neglect, but now someone had answered the plea Korff saw in her eyes, and her story was beginning to move in a very different direction.
Peanut’s Rescue Inspires Something Bigger
Helping animals in the Clovis area can be challenging because local rescue resources are limited. Korff’s organization is one of only a handful of rescues serving Clovis, while nearby Portales has even fewer options for animals in need.
Some additional resources are on the way. Portales is receiving about $195,000 through the state’s Animal Welfare Program for a mobile kennel building designed to support the care and sheltering of dogs and cats.
Even with additional resources, Korff knows that rescue work comes with significant expenses. Veterinary treatment, shelter, food, and ongoing care all require funding, particularly when animals like Peanut arrive needing extensive medical attention.
“You wish you could go ahead and take the whole umbrella of rescue, but it takes finances to do it,” Korff said.
Peanut’s experience has now inspired Korff to create something specifically for animals facing similar circumstances. He is starting a separate Peanut Fund to help sick animals in need of care, with plans to keep it separate from Adopt A Pet Society’s primary fund for other rescue expenses.
After decades of helping animals, Korff still believes there is value in caring for one life at a time. Peanut’s recovery shows just how much can change when someone notices an animal in distress and decides to help.
“If you take your time to care for something, that elevates you as a person,” Korff said. “And I honestly believe that.”
For Peanut, that care meant the difference between being left helpless and finally having the opportunity to heal. The puppy, once found injured and alone on an ant hill, is now recovering, while her story may help other vulnerable animals receive the care they need, too.
