Burnie had every reason to be frightened of the world around him. When the young dog was rescued and welcomed into the MASA family, severe wounds covered his face, and veterinarians who examined him said the injuries appeared consistent with some type of chemical exposure. Exactly what happened to Burnie before he reached safety remains unknown. His damaged skin made it clear that he needed help, but beneath those painful injuries was a puppy whose spirit was already beginning to show.
With foster parents Ashton and Jody stepping forward, Burnie’s difficult beginning finally started giving way to something much better. He had medical care, comfort, canine friends, and the opportunity to simply enjoy being a puppy.
Burnie was taken to Town & Country Veterinary Hospital first thing in the morning for a thorough examination. The veterinary team performed several tests, and thankfully, all of the results came back negative. Three veterinarians examined his injuries and agreed that his facial wounds appeared consistent with exposure to some kind of chemical. One possibility initially considered was that Burnie might have accidentally tried to drink from a container holding a chemical substance.
However, veterinarians found no burns, ulcers, or other damage inside his mouth or on his tongue. That discovery made the theory less likely and left the exact circumstances surrounding his injuries unknown.
Without knowing Burnie’s history, there was no way to determine exactly how the chemical exposure occurred. Rather than dwell on questions that might never be answered, his rescuers turned their attention toward helping him heal.
Burnie Begins His Recovery
Burnie’s treatment included an antibiotic and steroid injection, along with medications intended to control inflammation, pain, and discomfort associated with possible nerve damage. The difference in how he felt soon became noticeable.
Veterinary technicians also began hydrotherapy on his injured skin. During treatment, they carefully removed dead and dry tissue, helping expose healthier areas underneath and giving new tissue a better opportunity to form. His wounds were then treated with Granulex, a topical medication used as part of his ongoing wound care. The process was not always comfortable for Burnie, but each treatment represented another small step toward recovery.
After spending so much time being examined and treated, Burnie finally got to experience something far more enjoyable. At a temporary foster home, he met other dogs, investigated toys, enjoyed a satisfying meal, and settled down for some much-needed rest. Later, foster mom Ashton brought him home, where another new friend was waiting. Her dog Benny quickly became part of Burnie’s rapidly expanding social circle.
For a puppy whose recent life had involved painful wounds and veterinary treatment, those ordinary moments carried special meaning. Playing, eating, sleeping comfortably, and being surrounded by people who cared about him allowed Burnie to begin experiencing the kind of puppyhood he deserved.
His Personality Comes Bursting Through
As Burnie’s body began to heal, his personality became impossible to miss. He began making friends everywhere he went, although whether every one of those new friends was equally enthusiastic remained another question entirely. Burnie seemed to have an almost endless supply of energy. He ate enthusiastically, played with remarkable determination, and discovered that his bark could make sure everyone nearby knew exactly where he was.
Personal space apparently became optional in Burnie’s world. Quiet time was rarely high on his list of priorities either, especially when there were dogs, toys, food, or people nearby demanding his attention.
Underneath all that puppy chaos, however, rescuers saw an affectionate and joyful little dog. Burnie appeared eager to experience everything around him, almost as though he were making up for opportunities he may have missed earlier in life.
His enthusiasm became one of the most encouraging signs of his recovery. The injured puppy who arrived needing extensive care was becoming known just as much for his enormous personality as for the wounds on his face.
Healthy Tissue Brings New Hope
Burnie’s medical care has continued alongside all of his adventures. Hydrotherapy is being performed three times a day, and although it is hardly his favorite activity, the treatments appear to be becoming easier for him to tolerate as his wounds heal.
His caregivers have also been encouraged by the appearance of healthy new tissue. They believe the wound care and Granulex treatment have played an important role in supporting his recovery, and seeing healthier tissue develop has given everyone another reason to celebrate his progress.
Burnie’s face may never grow completely normal skin or fur in the areas most severely damaged. His appearance could always carry visible reminders of what he endured. But those differences have little to do with the dog Burnie is becoming.
He is energetic, affectionate, noisy, playful, and completely convinced that nearly everyone he meets should become his friend. His days are increasingly filled not with fear or pain, but with meals, naps, games, companionship, and the occasional hydrotherapy session he would probably prefer to skip.
Burnie’s beginning remains painful and mysterious, but his future no longer has to be defined by it. Surrounded by veterinary professionals, rescuers, foster caregivers, and canine companions, he is healing while discovering just how much fun life can hold.
The scars on his face may remain, but Burnie’s growing confidence and unmistakable joy tell a much bigger story. He survived a difficult beginning, found people willing to care for him, and is now getting the opportunity to become exactly the happy, wonderfully chaotic dog he was always meant to be.
