Few could have imagined how much determination was hidden inside Mango’s tiny, fragile body when she was rescued in Oklahoma. The French Bulldog was severely starved, badly injured, and so weak that she had almost no muscle left to support herself.
A witness reportedly said Mango had been thrown from a vehicle, and caregivers later discovered that she had also suffered two gunshot wounds to the head. At only 12 pounds, Mango faced injuries that would have been overwhelming for any dog, yet within just two days, she did something remarkable: she stood up and walked.
Mango’s injuries included multiple fractures involving her skull, eye socket, and jaw. She also arrived severely malnourished, leaving her caregivers at Angel Fund OKC with the difficult task of helping her recover without asking too much of her weakened body.
Her ability to walk so soon offered an encouraging sign, but it did not mean the hardest part was over. Mango is expected to need months of medical care, rehabilitation, careful nutrition, and healing before all of her injuries can be fully addressed.
A Recovery That Cannot Be Rushed
One of the biggest priorities is rebuilding the strength Mango lost while she was severely malnourished. Her caregivers explained that her nutrition has to be increased gradually because feeding a profoundly depleted animal too quickly can put them at risk for refeeding syndrome, a potentially serious complication.
For Mango, patience is part of the treatment. Her body needs time to adjust to additional nutrition while slowly restoring the muscle and strength she desperately needs. Physical rehabilitation will also play an important role in helping Mango regain what severe starvation took from her. Her caregivers say treatment may include neuromuscular electrical stimulation and, once she is strong enough, water therapy to help rebuild muscle and improve her movement.
Part of that work involves helping Mango become more aware of where she places her feet as she walks. After everything her weakened body has endured, even ordinary movement takes effort, making every careful step another sign of progress.
Mango Still Has More Hurdles Ahead
Mango’s facial injuries will require additional attention, but those treatments must wait until she is stronger. She currently remains too weak and malnourished to safely undergo the sedation or anesthesia that may be necessary for more extensive procedures.
Among Mango’s injuries are multiple fractures involving her jaw and the area beneath her eye socket. There is also a wound beneath her jaw that continues to leak saliva, and her caregivers do not yet know whether a salivary duct was damaged or whether the wound connects directly to the inside of her mouth.
Eventually, the wound will need to be explored, and specialists will have to determine how best to address the fractures in her face and jaw. Before that can happen, Mango needs to regain enough strength to safely tolerate whatever procedures her injuries may require.
For now, her recovery is being built from much smaller victories. Careful nutrition helps restore her depleted body, while rehabilitation encourages weakened muscles to work again and gives Mango an opportunity to become steadier on her feet.
There is no quick finish line waiting for Mango, and her recovery is expected to stretch across months. There may be difficult days along the way, but right now, the goal is simply to let her progress at the pace her body can safely handle.
Two Days Later, Mango Was Walking
Despite the severity of what she endured, Mango has already shown an extraordinary determination to keep moving forward. The little dog who arrived weighing only 12 pounds and without enough muscle to properly support herself was standing and walking just two days later.
Those first steps do not mean Mango is suddenly well, and months of recovery may still lie ahead. They do, however, offer an extraordinary glimpse of the fight still inside a dog whose body had been pushed almost beyond its limits.
Every bit of strength Mango regains brings her closer to the treatments and rehabilitation she still needs. For a dog who arrived unable to properly support herself, simply getting onto her feet represents a remarkable beginning.
Mango’s journey is only getting started, but those first steps carry enormous meaning. After surviving devastating injuries and extreme physical suffering, she is now surrounded by people carefully helping her rebuild her strength and giving her the opportunity to discover what it feels like to get stronger one gentle step at a time.
