For several frightening minutes, six-year-old Milo had no one beside him as smoke poured through his Pasadena home. The Sheltie was alone when the fire began, and with every passing moment, the air around him became harder to breathe. By the time firefighters reached him, Milo was unconscious beneath a table, his small body limp after breathing in heavy smoke. What followed was a desperate rescue involving multiple fire departments, repeated searches through a home where visibility was nearly gone, and five agonizing minutes when no one knew whether Milo would ever open his eyes again.
On Sept. 9, Milo’s family had briefly left the house to run errands while his owner, Fernando, was out of the country. What should have been an ordinary stretch of time alone quickly became a life-threatening emergency. A delivery person passing the property noticed smoke coming from the home and heard Milo barking from somewhere inside. Realizing an animal was trapped, the passerby immediately called 911.
Firefighters from Pasadena, Arcadia, and Sierra Madre soon arrived. Ring camera footage captured Arcadia firefighters breaking a window near the front of the house as crews worked to gain access. Sierra Madre firefighter Jessica Johnson was among those responding. Only in her second year as a firefighter, Johnson was facing her first active house fire call.
Searching Through Thick Smoke for Milo
Inside the house, conditions had become extremely difficult. Smoke was so dense that firefighters could barely see what was around them, and Milo’s barking had stopped. Johnson searched with a thermal imaging camera, hoping to detect Milo somewhere through the darkness. She entered the home three times before finally finding him in the living room beneath a table near the front window.
“I barely could see him. I just kind of picked him up, brought him outside, and realized you could feel how limp he was,” Johnson told ABC7.
Milo had reportedly been inside for at least eight minutes. By the time Johnson carried him outside, he was unconscious after severe smoke inhalation.
Firefighters immediately placed an animal oxygen mask over Milo’s face and began trying to revive him. The little dog who had been barking for help only minutes earlier was now completely unresponsive.
For approximately five long minutes, the crew continued working on him without seeing the response they desperately wanted. Then something changed. Milo rolled over.
His fur was covered with black soot and dust, and he had endured a terrifying ordeal, but he was alive. The moment offered an enormous sense of relief after firefighters had fought through dangerous conditions to find him.
Meanwhile, Milo’s family rushed back home, unsure whether he would survive. Learning that he had regained consciousness brought the news they had been desperately hoping to hear.
Milo’s improvement continued after the rescue. Despite having a slight cough and needing a follow-up veterinary appointment, his family said he was already running and playing again. His veterinarian expected him to make a full recovery.
The house itself may require months of repairs, but for Milo’s family, having him safely home matters far more than anything that was damaged.
A few days later, Milo was well enough for a special reunion with the firefighters who had refused to give up on him. His family brought him back to meet the crew and even arrived with custom shirts featuring Milo’s smiling face. For Johnson, seeing the Sheltie alive and recovering made an already unforgettable first house fire call even more meaningful.
“I shed a little bit of a tear but, you know, you’ve got to keep it professional and continue to do my job,” she said. “I did my job, and it came out successful, came out rewarding.”
Milo’s family said they will be “forever grateful” to the firefighters who risked their safety to reach him. Their home will eventually be repaired, but Milo’s recovery gave the family something far more important to celebrate. The Sheltie who was once carried from the smoke unconscious was soon back on his paws, running, playing, and surrounded by the people who nearly lost him.
