Below, please find a statement from PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in response to news that a consumer advocacy group is suing Starbucks over misleading claims that its coffee is ethically sourced.
PETA can attest to Starbucks’ deliberately misleading marketing since the company claims to promote environmentally responsible sustainability while admitting that dairy is by far the biggest contributor to its carbon footprint, but it slaps a 90-cent surcharge on eco- and animal-friendly vegan milks. PETA is looking into weighing in on this case, and in the meantime, we encourage everyone to join the more than 150,000 people, including Sir Paul McCartney, who have called on Starbucks to end this miserly upcharge.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, or Instagram.
